Cute thing one that Crime Fighter has started, is actively asking for kisses by pressing his face against mine and making kiss noises. Sometimes the stuffed animal needs a kiss, too, and is also applied firmly to my face. This is usually first thing in the morning while we're contemplating this "vertical" thing that all the kids are talking about.

Cute thing two is happening right now. He is sitting in the rocker "reading" with several books. I cannot give you fresh proof of it, as all recording devices are elsewhere.

Baby Update

mizarchivist: (CrimeFighterGrins)
The baby!!! Yes, I need to talk about The Crime Fighter. I keep composing posts about him and then failing to commit them to electrons.I'm feeling super-bad because I've not really written about hi since Thanksgiving. So, let's see...
I've stopped thinking about him in terms of months. He's a year and a half, give or take. I did just sort out he'll be 18 months at the end of this month. So, officially 1.5. :)

I'm ridiculously behind on taking pictures, shooting video, or sharing either. I think this is inevitable?  Know he's doing well and as entirely amazing as one might expect or wish.
Also, he may well not be bald forever for realsies. Slowly but surely he's getting some nice, dark duck-down.

... Sitting in a shallow box, putting crayons into the box, and out of the box, over and over and over. Not quite to the drawing on the big box in which he was sitting. Maybe tomorrow. The crayon box is now reinforced with tape. It might last through to Friday if we're lucky.

Other cute of the evening was putting on and taking off his new scarf knit by Aunt [livejournal.com profile] asciikitty. It matches the one his Dada got and the one his new Waldorf doll, Jack-Jack, has.

Meta: the time is coming where I will need to transition from the "baby!" tag to "Kid!"

So, my phone has taken to switching itself off again. Arrrrgh. Solution- get a clone of what I've been using. It turns out an extra $50/month is a good use of money so I can look at my calendar or check to see when a bus is coming. And so on. Sweetly, my father's offered to be my on-call bus checker to mitigate the disappointment of not being able to check the status myself.  I will re-evaluate the notion of an upgrade to a smart phone after one or both of the following factors change: I pay off our current health related debt or QE acquires employment with a steady, long term paycheck.

Our velociraptor has successfully mastered the art of climbing up the kitchen chairs. It's exciting and harrowing. He's also leveled up with some more speech stuff. He can identify where his nose is or someone else's. Also tongue, ears, and eyes. the last of that can be a bit problematic. He also said something akin to nose when asked within the last 48 hours. He has added monkey and kitty to the menagerie of animal noises. It's little wonder he wasn't sleeping well last week. That's a lot of thinking.  He seems to have two settings: GO-GO-GO!!! and SLEEP. Those of you with kids at wiggly luggage stage? I can't stress enough how much you need to enjoy this, because someday they'll turn into creatures with the morals of sewer rats and the ambition of Genghis Khan. And for those of you with toddlers capable of sitting still without being drugged or tied up: I don't wanna hear it how nice for you. This is not to say he's not an amazing, wonderful- and did I say amazing?-  kid. Because he is. Just.... well, I don't know how QE manages to make it to the end of the day. In related news, I'm new levels of tired. And I wasn't even home all day.

I seem to have run out of energy to continue this post.
mizarchivist: (CrimeFighterGrins)
My last post mostly sums it up, but with the additions of
  • Hi (haaaah) No (neeeeeh) Animal noises now include tiger (rawrrawr!), cow says mmmmmeh, and [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror's trying to get him to make pirate Arrrr noises. He definitely has a wider animal noise vocabulary than English one. My mom pointed out to me yesterday that I did the same thing at his age. I'm entirely amused.
  • Most animals are bears, most birds are ducks, but he corrected a bit when I tried to explain goose, not duck.
  • Hearing the word wave, and waving
  • If I'm doing something that's not 100% paying attention to him, his favorite tactic to get me to focus is to hand me a book. Cle-ver. It's like... he knows.
  • More/better mimicking. Preferably if I'm doing something silly like shaking my head and making noises. Best kind of baby humor.
  • The long awaited 15-16th teeth showed up.
  • Massively improved walking. When he's let go to explore (usually wandering around town- today was Harvard Yard), he gets very grumpy with being picked up or put back in his stroller. At some point, I'd like to see how far that lasts before he tires out. The obvious problem is that I'll fall over first.
  • The downside is the headstrong, zomg, and sleep regression. I'm chalking it up to his brain growing so fast, he just can't stay asleep.

Hm. I guess that's it for now. Yay for hot tubs. (Why am I still sitting here?!)

It's been 14 years since [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance and I decided to make an official go of it.  This year he's gotten me a renewed, slightly used, but nicely broken in Commander in Chief. This is really preferable over a new one, because I don't like the OS that goes with Mittens.

Some snapshots from anniversaries past, courtesy of Live Journal:

2003-2011... )
2012- It's been an intense year of growth and challenge. Again, there's this kid. He's great and amazing and a lot of work.
My work has shifted remarkably over the past 12 months. I have a great part time office mate/colleague whom I adore. We have a development director, a new admin, and a new cataloger. The new outnumber the established and our activity is just spinning up and up and up. We have a lot to fix, though. So much growth so quickly, and we just don't have the infrastructure to deal a lot of the time. But I hope we'll get caught up and be even better for it.
And omg, Election Fatigue. I know all elections can be pretty exhausting, but this one felt extra vitriolic. I don't want to say the worst ever, because that seems unlikely. I'm hugely relieved that the president has been re-elected. I realize he's not perfect, but he will at least support (most) of the social issues that Mittens almost certainly would actively trash or allow his cronies to trash.
[livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance has had a rough year. We realized in April that it was most realistic for him to stay home and be the full time kid-care. He's also found that too many years of working in the field and deferring health maintenance has lead to a lot of catch up.  BTW: cortizone shots happen on 11/20. Hopefully this will be the tipping point for him.

There's, of course, SO much more than just what I've said, but it's a snapshot.
LOVE to my dear life partner (in crime). LOVE to everyone who voted yesterday and to our POTUS who'll be around for a few more years. LOVE to my friends and family who remind me that the world is full of wonderful people. People who like me!

20121004: Crime Fighter and trusty sidekick

Grandpa [livejournal.com profile] aint_it_hard sent a picture from his visit a few weeks ago. Mr. D. with his favorite pup (who is still nameless)
And I'd been waiting to make a fresh icon featuring our crime fighter that's not from last year.

[livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance and Crime Fighter went to Goodwill this morning and found a tiger suit. I am certain this is the cutest thing ever. Good job to QE for successfully capturing the kid in the new outfit, with his new favorite toy, the dustbin brush, and showing some serious proficiency in mobility. He's looking all ninja-like, except in a tiger suit, not black pajamas.

My baby's really not a baby so much these days... well, maybe a little. But he's well on his way to kid-land.

I've been hugely remiss in uploading pics. All the ones I have in flickr are from August or early September.

Sunday Crime Fighter waved goodbye when [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror's mom and sister left- that was a first! He has repeated that action again today when PT left for work.
He is also really saying Ma and Da words purposefully when trying to get our attention
There was a closed 12 pack of coke cans at almost floor level. He got it on the floor and stood on it to get at something taller.
PT's futon and Daddy's chair are two mountains that must be scaled. Chair achievement was unlocked at least once yesterday, but could not be replicated. I did not show him what he needed to do. We do not give the inmates keys to the asylum.
Oh- and for a few moments he managed "gentle hands" this morning. Not replicated this evening.
He has 2 pre-molars up top and probably not unrelated, Self-weaning continues. (That makes 10 teeth, btw)

Amazing kid. And I get all Wednesday off to properly celebrate one year.

I went into labor and it was the longest weekend of my life. (Mr. D. was born on Monday the 22nd).

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] primal_pastry for spending her birthday with us-- happy birthday again!, and for doing such a good job for the days we spent waiting to meet Mr. Crime Fighter.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance for being collected under pressure and providing such excellent genetic material to our sprog.

[livejournal.com profile] beah reminded me I've not made a baby update post in a while. So, our mutual friends will know the sudden similarity in this morning's posts is not an accident.  So, where to begin? How about a picture:

Lots and lots of stuff and 2 pictures )
And in less than a month, a year old. There will be a cupcake, oh yes.
mizarchivist: (Huh)
I can think of a lot of useless ideas for what to get Crime Fighter for his birthday next month, including a puppy, a big vat of sugar, squealy toys.... All of those ideas are, of course, duly considered and shunted off.

So, what does one get for a one year old when what he loves best is to play with plastic wrappers that make a ton of noise and to play in the recycling bin?

- Got a cold, eventually shared it with Crime Fighter and eventually [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror.
+ Attended [livejournal.com profile] barodar's wedding, had a great time
- Kidlet ran out of cope half way back from Mosaic and serenaded the kind ride-giving childless friends with inconsolable howls.
+ Celebrated Father's Day with QE: a picnic at Spy Pond Park with [livejournal.com profile] entrope and family
- Lost my bike helmet... or it was stolen off my porch
+ QE's letting me borrow his for today. My head felt so unpleasantly exposed without one yesterday.
+ Boss is back from 2 week cruise. We can revisit the stuff put on hold since last month because we weren't going to deal with it pre-vacation.
+ Got to attend [livejournal.com profile] mangosteen's Backbar extravaganza like a real adult last night and was able to buy [livejournal.com profile] doeeyedbunny the promised drink in thanks and apology for the ride with screamy baby.
-Teething, congested baby had a wholly off night and would not settle or sleep after his final feed of the evening. There was snuggling and nursing, but he was just not convinced this "Sleep in my own bed" plan was the right and true path.
- None of us really fell asleep before midnight but the usual routine of up at 5 was still on course. I'm more than slightly groggy.

I got to go to Kemp park with Crime Fighter this afternoon. That place is amaaaaaaazing. We hung out with [livejournal.com profile] primal_pastry,[livejournal.com profile] red_canna and their kids. RC's middle boy, P, was very sweet and played with Crime Fighter in the water. The baby was all: "OMG, this water thing is so. cool. Everyone should try it. Also, possibly sample the maple seeds and the wood chips and the sand. YUM." And asleep before we crossed the green to the T stop.

I also found a hat at Helena's- one I'd seen when going by on the bus- it's pretty close to what I have been wanting to wear instead of my Union baseball cap:
Sunday Afternoons Natalie Ribbon Sun Hat Taupe
Although mine looks a bit more in the purple family- but not much. It's squishable and femme. Woohoo!

I wanted to note before I get distracted by the normal pattern of a day, but my kid is more a kid than a baby these days--
Here, let me show you:
Pic and laundry list of what's new in Crime Fighter Land )
TL:DR-- still exhibiting weapons-grade cute much of the time. Yay baby. :)
mizarchivist: (Bucky Katt)

So, I get a call from [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance-
They're playing. Crime Fighter brings him a book, so QE finds a comfy spot and reads it to him
Crime Fighter then grabs the blanket near by and works on covering himself with it, gets a bit of help there and then conks out on Daddy's chest. The boy asked for a story. And then put himself down for a nap. SNF!! All this while I was already gone to work. I'm in awe. I hope I get to see this for myself sometime soon.
