Scratch tickets.

I go to Irving's for coffee just about every work day and see people buying anywhere from 1-50 dollars worth of scratch tickets. They've got this bizarre system, obviously. They rattle off the designated numbers of various tickets and fork over their cash.
The obvious is: imagine how much money they'd have if they stuck the money for their (likely daily) "hobby"/obsession in a savings account.

Now mind you, I can understand the random buck to the regular lotto every once in a while. It's just a buck.

Oh well. I'll file it under the unsolved urban mysteries along with 3" fake nails and pork rinds.
