Update on the laughter of the gods

So, as things come in 3, I'm taking the email from Simmons telling me that I'm not cool enough [my words] to snag an intern this semester is the final part of my less than fun morning.

I tell myself that it's one less thing to worry about. The pattern seems, though, that if one doesn't get one in the fall, one is less likely to get one in the winter.

I may not love having an intern, but it's my only way to get anything resembling management skills.

Don't feel bad. When I was the archivist at a tiny archive I tried getting an intern. Problem, when there are a couple of interns out there and you have to compete with the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, a few big museums and whatever archives there are on campus, you lose. Even being president of the library school's alumni chapter didn't help.

as they say, time heals most wounds. I'm feeling less wounded. As you probably know, interns are mixed blessings. I like having the company since I'm normally solo and I like being able to practice my managerial skills, but they do break up one's routine whether you want the break or not and all that goes with being a temporary teacher. ... well, at least when you get the fresh-faced first semester students smile

LC and the Smithsonian are indeed siren calls like the Harvards and MITs here.
