A ritual of a squealy Ani Fangirl
Caulay gave me Ani's latest, Educated Guess last night (along with probably the coolest tshirt Righteous Babe Records has ever circulated, which reads: "The Media Isn't Fooling Me" - and so today, I have popped in the new disk and started the process of repetitive listening.
I heard it once last night, but it was at Caulay's and I was much more interested in being social. I consider this round to be the actual first listen. I still haven't absorbed the words or even half of the melodies. I might by the 3rd repetition.
I very much believe that I picked up my music appreciation quirks from Dad: the man who will put [foo] on endless repeat til he knows it in his sleep. Mind you, he'll put it on repeat, then leave the house. Many a time there has been that Mom or I would come home to have the latest still on and Dad long gone. grin and a shake of the head
But, like Dad, music is more of a religion than church. And while I may ignore her for weeks at a time, Ani still has a monopoly on my affection and has since I first heard her 8 years ago. I feel extremely grateful that she chooses to crank out an album pretty much every 10 months.

Ani does rock, I agree. I should buy more of her albums.

I guess I should be glad that volume doesn't carry through an internet chat client.

I've found everything after 'Plastic Castles has required some level of "force" before I could truly love it.
I have a song stuck in my head right now, but I've not internalized it enough to know which one it is, or what the lyrics are. Just generic Aniness.
I've found this one a bit easier to just listen to than a few of the recent ones. All in all, as satisfied as I can, considering I don't think one can duplicate Dialate.

When I heard this album was just her again I was hoping she was going to do something more like her early work. I think her best work is the simpler stuff. As she's gotten bigger and more popular she's added a lot more instruments, overudbbing, etc. And I think some of it is just overproduced now. I think that's also evidenced by the fact that when I've seen the newer stuff done live I liked it better - it was more raw and simpler. I liked her and a guitar. I think some of the best stuff is the stuff she did with Andy Stochansky. They really worked well together musically.

Yeah. I started in when she, Andy n' Sara were touring. Extra sentimentality, but I agree, now that I know all the repetoir, that so worked for me.
I can't disagree that it's over-done these days. Does this follow the "rule" that states that rich comedians are no longer funny?
I try to be realistic about an artist's growth. Someone as prolific as our girl and been actively playing since she was 18ish- I don't expect her to keep the sound from her 20s. Miss it, though? Yes.
I'm just glad she got over her "jazz" phase. That really didn't work.
