7 months (aka, 33 weeks)

I really have stopped thinking in terms of weeks. It's just too granular for me, I guess. ... which is unfortunate, because at the suggestion of our chairman of the board, who is a super-enthused grandpa, I picked up Wonder Week to see if we could transition through the bumpy cranky parts of baby-land a bit better. I just picked it up this afternoon, so I'll let you know after I have  time to skim a few things. 
What's up in the world of crime fighting? Well... 


Mobility:

• Sometime since last month, the stabilizers started to kick in more and he's able to sit up more more effectively. 
• Forward locomotion is entirely happening now. This was not necessarily true a week and some days ago. The only major issue is lack of traction in this house. 
• We may need to change his nickname to Sir Edmund (Hillary). He's not actually climbing, but he wants to be. 
• The thing that's most fun is grabbing onto stuff and standing up. He's started to use any adult within reach, or will crawl over to one for the express purpose of a prop for standing. 
• Rolling is master-level. Best when done on the changing table after the diaper is off. 

Food and Food Tools:

• 6 teeth with 2 more ready to pop out at a moment's notice. 
• So, sort of an on-going teething marathon. All things go in mouth, but I also realize it's the age. We drew the line today at the floor mat. :P
• Likes: spinach (saag, specifically); rice/red pepper/ground turkey + hummus to make it sticky; banana; pear; puffs; avocado; lentils; cow milk; Cheerios; pirate booty; teddy grahams; bacon; french toast; scrambled eggs; sausage; potatoes!! (can you tell we take him to the diner a lot?); chicken; beets; lemon slices
• Dislikes: apple sauce; yogurt; baby oatmeal; things too hot; some things not warm
• Food is best when he-- Sir-Mr.Edmund Crime Fighter Hillary-- feeds himself. We have a routine where I have 2 spoons going in tandem, which I try to load up with something, and he attempts to navigate to his mouth. 

Social/Cognitive

• He does get to see kids pretty regularly. I wish I was around more to see him near other kids, but it's usually when I'm at work. 
• Peek a Boo is getting to be more fun. 
• Uncle purple_terror and Daddy quiet_elegance throw him around quite a bit, which yields the hoped-for laugh riot
• QE is helping him develop his evil laugh. We will probably have to document this soon. QE booms out a nice "Ahhh-hahahahahahahhaaaaa.... FOOOLS! KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!" And of course the baby laughs.  A lot of guys ignore the laugh- it's about standards. 
• He still makes the most pathetic noise ever when tired- this whiny moany thing, which QE and I find to be entirely  endearing (he is our progeny. It might be contractual to feel thusly)
• The bouncy chair is about at the end of its usefulness. It's had the support straps raised 2 times already. He much prefers free-range exercise to captive. Go figure. 
• His habit of quiet observation in a new environment continues. After about 20 minutes and he's pretty much scoped it all out, he'll start getting pretty chatty. One of his babysitters has already taken him to his first two college classes, where he is apparently quite opinionated on the topics of literature. 
• Phonemes continue to get more complex, but no clear words. We have dismissed things that sound like "ma" and "da" as the infinite monkeys eventually writing Hamlet. My favorite is when he talks under his breath, like he's practicing to himself. 
• Down side of new cognition- The new habit of waking up at 4. He's managed to get from bedtime to 5:30. I do realize that getting 9 hours is sort of awesome and amazing, but still. He has demonstrated he can do it. Since he's stuck in our bedroom til we move, we're pretty keen on him remembering how to chill a bit longer. We'll see if going to bed at 8 will help any. h/t to Wex who reminded me that might help. 

Vital Stats:

• No idea, really. He doesn't go back to the doctor for a while. We'll assume he's bigger than the last time I brought it up. 

So, that's the long-form of "I think my kid rules" - I am really looking forward to sharing him with my parents. They had fun before, but there's actual playing now. Woohoo! 

Why with a spoon, Cousin? Why not with an ax or a knife? ... Because it'll hurt more, you twit!

Wait until he perfects the quick twist and flip, (like an angry stranded fish.) Even holding both ankles in one hand off the mat you will still somehow end up with a baby on their hands and knees with their toes still pointing at the ceiling and their legs crossed. Now while you've got butt paste on your other hand you have to figure out how to untwist them with your non-dominant hand that is holding their feet.

Yeaaaah- WWF could take lessons from babies on quick twist and flip. Nobody told me how strong babies would be.

He was asleep until QE's alarm went off at 5:30. There won't be an alarm tomorrow morning, so if I'm lucky he'll go to 6.
