A friend of mine alerted me to the issue of cell phones being put up for grabs to telemarketers. Naturally, one is charged when you answer a call from these leeches. Therefore, if you want to avoid this hassle for the next 5 years, visit this site: www.donotcall.gov. It takes 31 days for your number to register on the register.

I swallowed this hook, line and sinker. :} But after I added my new cell to the registry (my land line's been there forever), a friend pointed out that cell numbers have always been exempt, and I can't find anything (except on 'rumors' sites) that says anything different. Does your friend have a source, or is this an urban legend?

I had also assumed that cell numbers were exempt, because you are paying for the call whether it is outgoing or incoming. Why should you have to pay for a telemarketer's phone call? That seems very unfair.

I wonder what would happen if wireline numbers ("home phones") are allowed to be ported to wireless carriers. But, then again, I don't wonder all that much since it won't happen immediately and I don't have a wireline. Though I do have a VoIP line, which might be considered a wireline. And then I've the virtual number in Ottawa, which might be another wireline. [le sigh]

I've gotten random calls from telemarketers, just fyi.

There has been much recent rearrangement of rules on who telemarketers can call. The ban on calling cellphones is still in place, but with the spate of deregulation on other subjects, I would worry about cellphones becoming free targets for weasel companies.
