I bet your eyes are brown
... 'cause you're full of shit!
I happened to catch Bob the Rollerblader, a guy I see every season and never without his blades on. He's very tall, well muscled, almost never with a shirt on, tan, etc. He sort of stands out and after 3 years of passing hellos, thought I'd chat for a few minutes. He sort of exudes confidence and ego: a man who has no problem getting a date. He asked me in an offhand way about college. I laugh and say that's cute. He proclaims slight confusion and I clarify that it's been quite a while since I was in college. He insists he must know then, how old I am. 30. No way- that's amazing. I wouldn't have guessed above 23, 24 tops and that I "look good." Snorf. Thanks, buddy. More mindless small talk and I decide it's time to get to the library. Still, it left me smiling.
bookteacher has infected my brain about fiction/non-fiction. Either that, or it was a typical issue I have at the Lexington Library: they have a huge gap in recent publications, which happens when your building is in temporary quarters, then the market goes kerplooey and the town cuts your budget by a fair bit. So no Kushiel's Dart for the immediate consumption. If I truly must know what this series is about this week, I'll visit the BPL, which will certainly provide for me. In the meantime, I borrowed the new Douglas Adams biography and The Friar and the Cipher; Roger Bacon and the Unsolved Mystery of the Most Unusual Manuscript in the World. I hope one will be engrossing enough to keep me occupied in high distraction environments, particularly the NYC trip. If not, I've got an Elmore Leonard book on disk and African folk tales brought to the Westerners from the same author as No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, a series I couldn't get into due to writing style. I may fare better in general with this guy in audio form.
So, further investigation in talking to Cingular yielded the following information: if I could get an old AT&T phone, I can get that activated- preferably by phone- and not have it mess with my contract. Great. I let my sweet spousal unit loose on the internet with an acceptable credit card and a hopefully reliable web site. He has ordered his new picture phone and gadgets and 2 day delivery for under $150 bucks. No prob. It is a used phone, otherwise I expect it would have cost more. I no longer plan to look for a new phone as the last call also yielded the tidbit that since Cingular is still integrating AT&T service areas or whatever, that dropped calls (our current major complaint) is a temporary issue. Nothing else is wrong with my phone. I may see if I can buy a new battery for it, but that's easy enough.

FYI: There's still one more book in His Dark Materials: The Amber Spyglass is waiting for you if you want to finish that trilogy. Also, I own all three Kushiel books and have finished with the first two. Finally, just ask and I can make the Anne Bishop Black Jewels trilogy happen.
'cause, hey, just 'cause I don't read fiction much doesn't mean you don't have to...
Yes, please
Don't worry- what I may have neglected to write down when discussing non/fiction was that looking at the options, everything in fic just looked like fast food, if you know what I mean. I'm not giving up on the whole class, just supplementing the diet
Re: Yes, please
Excellent. Fortunately, there's a lot of really worthy nonfiction out there. We should talk about it sometime. I can get an idea of what you're looking for in good nonfic and make recommendations from there.
I totally understand about Pullman. I still haven't read Subtle Knife, and now it's been so long since I read Golden Compass that I'm going to need to re-read that before I can continue. So, no worries on Amber Spyglass. It'll still be there.
I'll bring Kushiel's Dart and Kushiel's Chosen to Diesel, as well as the first Anne Bishop (which was on the shelf at Honan-Allston on Friday, IIRC). If you give me permission to look up your record, I can order you the other Bishops and get them to Copley by Thursday or so. Or, I can email you the book information and you can request them yourself. Either way, it's all good.
Re: Yes, please
sounds good. So far, I have no plan.
I think it'll be worthy re-read and read
I won't be at Diesel for a long time- hopefully long enough for the tradeoff. Don't worry about Bishop. I have 2 library books to get through and theoretically the first Kushiel. If I have too many in my cue, I tend to ignore all of them, although if I did want it, I'd let you set it up :)

Second, I also have Kushiel books as well as the first Anne Bishop books, so you are welcome to borrow them from me also.
As for the Bacon book, I read it and was vaguely disappointed. It did a good job of giving a biography of Bacon and the known history of the manuscript. I'll reserve the problems that I had until after you finish with it.
And I'm glad to hear that you've had some luck with the phone situation. I certainly hope it works out for you.

I consciously rotate my reading - one fiction, one nonfic/nonwork, one work-related. Exceptions made for series I have all of, e.g. I'm currently halfway through the Babylon 5 trilogy on Centauri Prime and plan to finish all three volumes before I pick up another work book (since the title before that was Eats, Shoots, and Leaves).
