My current issue with my iPod is as follows. It seems to think that its temp file is corrupted and that I should run "chkdsk" utility to fix this. Well, I've yet to find a means to run *any* utility via iTunes/iPod. I did just download the latest software for iPod in the hopes that would help. It also allows one to wipe it clean to factory specs, which is my default fix (after I copy all the music I have on it- I figured the software to do that last month).
Has anyone out there run across this and fixed it without doing a clean sweep?

Can you enable disk mode for it (that ought to be an option in iTunes) and take a look at it as if it were just a removable drive?

If so, then you can run chkdsk on it... Unfortunately, I'm not sure if this works, since I haven't ever used mine in Windows...

No idea how to do that with your 'Pod.

But I figured you'd be cheered (or something) to know that sometime between disconnecting from the computer and my arrival at Wellington Station this morning, mine turned into an inert piece of metal. You can poke at the buttons and reconnect it to the computer all you want, it's not doing nothin'.

So I have the receipt and I shall visit the Apple Store tomorrow to obtain a replacement. The damned thing is only a month and a week old! Unfortunately, Apple stopped making the Mini a couple months ago and are mostly out of them (that's the real reason for the "Free iPod Mini" promotion they were doing for students, run the stock out).

Pretty much. The Nano has completely replaced the Mini in Apple's line. Unfortunately it doesn't hold as much music so I don't see it as a viable replacement for me.

Some of that is that they did some market research and discovered that most people have what us music-snobby types would consider an embarassingly tiny music collection-- something like 300-500 songs. So that extra gig or so that the iPod nano lost when compared to the Mini wouldn't even be noticed by the Great Unwashed.

And people who want to carry around more than 500 or 1000 songs at a time wouldn't have bought a mini in the first place, and would already have a 20gig or 40gig iPod. I suspect that's the reason the 30gig and 40gig iPods vanished as well, leaving the giant and smallish options only-- why release 3 models when 2 will do? Either people carry ridiculous amounts around at once (I have 8500 songss on my 40gig iPod) or they don't have that much and don't really care...

I'd also guess that most 60gig iPods still only have 30-40 gig of music on them.
