Yay medical proceedings! Cut for her pleasure
So I freaked. Getting the xray taken meant that bit of plastic in my mouth and it bloody well *hurt*- I started to cry. Reading the conscent form freaked me more. Dentist lady offered me Valium- isn't that nice? I said I could deal.
Oh, look, kids! It's an *abscess!* A very little one. This will make things complicated. "Abscess" and all that it entails didn't really sink in, other than it hurt when she touched it. The danger absolutely didn't sink in til I got to work today and Head Librarian went "OMGWTF" and such.
6 shots of novocane later and we are good to go. Oh, and maybe 2 more for good measure once she's in. Ok, 2 more three-quarters of the way through. Weird- this is less stressful than the drilling and crap last week. Not so much with a drill and a lot more with hand-powered cleaning thangs. Really: no pain.
And I luuuurve dental dams. I had to giggle when she was explaining what it was. I giggled on the inside. "Yes, doctor. I could show you another use for that, too. Girly safe-sex, my dear!!... could I take some of those for the road??" But seriously- when the apparatus that held the dental dam was in place all the work was off of me. I just relaxed and listened to my tunes. All the stops I requested was for me to cough or to readjust a bit that was pinching the not numb part of my mouth.
The abscess may have been small, but it was still very much working its nastiness out at the end of the procedure. So, I'm on antibiotics and 800mg of ibuprofen, with vicodin as backup if I'm really unhappy. I have to go back for the root canal to get filled after the meds are done with their thing. That could be *next* Thursday, or the 29th- the day before I leave for Ohio. This doesn't include getting the post and crown fitting. That's *after* by at least 2 weeks.

The executive not-gross version is: So, I have to go back to have the second half of yesterday's procedure done. I'm currently functioning very well with my horse-pill ibuprofen and not remotely uncomfortable while it's buzzing in my system. Just don't offer me ice cream for a while. But maybe warm custard or pudding? and cake.
I also got the metaphorical gold star and a huge pat on the back from the dentist and her tech for going from weepy as hell to entirely fine without a mid-process freak/pain moment. I also walked out of there with a scrip for Valium, just in case for next time. Heh.

My mom had an abscessed tooth that ruptured on a drive back from FL to PA. All I can say is ew. It was gross and icky and stunk. Be thankful you got yours taken care of now while it was small.

And, DAMN, woman, what the hell have you been doing to your teeth!?

I haven't been to the dentist in.... um... a decade? I haven't had a cavity (and they were all really tiny ones) since high school, though. I keep meaning to schedule an xray/ teeth cleaning now that I have dental insurance again, but the dentist freaks me out just like any other doctor. And the two times I got fluoride treatments as a kid, they made me hurl.

If this is you getting lucky, I don't think I want to go to any more of those types of parties with you.

Though I am glad you're getting with the better.

[Inserting standard flamboyant [livejournal.com profile] lifecollage response:]

Such a bwave widdle girwl!! We've got a lollipop for you!

[/annoying response]

In all seriousness, go thee. Oddly enough, dentist's chairs are the one place where my vaunted tolerance flies right out the window. In truth, th'art a braver lass than I.

Mmmmm, Custard. Pudding. Cake............Chocolate cake with pudding in the middle, with a thin skin of vanilla custard on top.

I seem to have a project to complete by tomorrow afternoon. Rock on. See you in Melrose!

Oh, I beg to differ. Chocolate custard cake is (almost) never wrong tool.

And if you eat both halves, at least, there is symmetry.

Sympathies and very gentle hugs on your ordeal. At least you got good drugs. My dental torture team didn't offer me either Valium or Vicodin.

Nothing really, except something to make you laugh. When I had all 4 wisdom teeth out I asked how long it would be before I could give a blowjob. I euphamized it, trying to ask how long it would be before I could drink through a straw, etc, and he just kept saying "don't use a straw! just drink from the glass or use a spoon!" and so I asked "but how long until I can, you know, suck as if I'm sucking on a straw?" Not sure if he got the message, but at least he told me when (about a week, when the stitches dissolved).
