Over 3 years ago, I did the 100 things about me meme and some of those things are inaccurate now, so I wanted to re-do it. I've kept some but mostly they are new. Go here to see the original- Here we go. 100 things about me.
Baseline history/ family-
- I was born in Boston on April 24, 1975 sometime in the morning at the Women’s Lying In Hospital (now part of Brigham and Women’s)
- My parents moved back to Ohio when I was 9 months old, although I know Mom really didn't want to go back. But the housing market was (and still is) expensive
- My mom is the 2nd oldest out of 5 siblings, My dad is the 2nd oldest out of 4 siblings.
- Both of them grew up in alchoholic environments
- My parents are really cool
- I am an only child
- The age gap between my youngest uncle (Will) and me is 10 years. The age gap between that youngest uncle and his sister (Aunt Leslie) is 20 years. I have a cousin (Genivieve) who is 25 years younger than I am.
- My parents still live in the house we moved into in 1980 (the year I started kindergarten)
- My grandmother helped establish the Unitarian church I went to as a kid
- Growing up, my mom owned an art store; I'd stay there after school often and I started to hone my organizational skills there.
- We had cats growing up: Kiki, Shadow, Max, Merlin, Cosmo, Lily. While we had Cosmo, I became allergic
- My parents have hosted AFS exchange students- Barbro from Norway, 1992/3; Basak from Turkey, 1993/4; Nina from Finland and Iris from Austria, 1995/6; Claire from France, 1995/6; Teresa from Italy, 1996/7; Frederica from Germany, 2000/01.
- My parents got a dog a few years ago. I never thought I'd see the day
- I have 2 nieces via
quiet_elegance's brother and sister in law, and lots of friends' kids who call me Aunt
quiet_elegance and I got married November 7, 1998.
- I kept my surname.
- I have lived in Lexington with
quiet_elegance and
purple_terror since 2002
School - The elementary school I went to was across the street from my house
- That school is now closed due to money mismanagement and the property is going to be filled with condos someday soon.
- I hated junior high
- Choir was great in junior high; art class was more fun than choir in high school
- I got chicken pox my first week of high school
- I wish I had more of a chance to move ahead in math but I've never liked the subject
- I wanted to go to Antioch for college
- My dad convinced me to go to Ohio University instead, but not until I'd spent a year in community college
- My degree from OU is in history, although I was an English major for about a quarter. I didn't want to analyze Shakespeare or Ibsen ever again.
- Everyone thought I'd go to school for art. I wanted to get a job when I was done, though.
- He also suggested that I become a librarian when I was in high school, which stuck. I just didn't know I'd be an archivist until I was applying for graduate school
- Went to Simmons Library and Information Science program in Boston straight from Ohio U.
Friends and so forth (this is a harder section to fill in than I thought) - My 3 best friends from grade school all had kids before they were 20. Amy has 3, Grace has 4, Stacy has 2.
- Amy and I have known each other since we were in diapers and we're still close.
- I had more boyfriends in junior high than high school
- The focal point for my friends in at Ohio U was the Unitarian group, although I almost never went to church
- I regret hurting my ex, Dan, but I also know he's not likely to let go of the hurt I caused (and it's been 10 years)
- It's very difficult for me to let friends go and allow ourselves to grow apart.
Mental workings & Foibles - I put in the divisions into this list because I am an organizer to the bone. According to
ahf, if you give me a pile of rocks, I will find 3 different features by which I will sort them. She is so not wrong.
- We didn't have a TV until I was 14, and then only because my then-boyfriend at the time convinced me to pester for it.
- I'm an ENTJ, but the E and N are very much on the 50% marks. I think E is at 60-70%, but I'm very, very J. (note bit about organizer)
- I loathe crowds and loud noise
- When I went to college, I suddenly got allergies and became lactose intollerant.
- When I was 3, I could outsnore my grandfather. Now that I can have milk again, it's at the top of the list of things I would like to change about me.
- My grandmother Marilyn's death was the most traumatic event of my life
- I don't have any phobias, per se, but I am not fond of heights and am averse to squishing big bugs
- Becoming Donna Reed is no longer a huge fear for me. Particularly since we now have people come in and clean for us (yay!)
- I am the social secretary at my house
- I am not subtle
- I hope someday pinball will make a come-back
- If I am not careful, I forget to leave time for myself.
- Telling me something (how to do X, get to Y) only works so far, then I want to try it out for myself before I can take it at face value. This is similar to not being able to just take something as so without reasons for it being like that.
- Fixate? Yes, why do you ask? But I can also be distractable.
- But boy can I herd cats.
- My puritan work ethic can go to sleep for hours, sometimes days on end
- I don't do well just sitting and doing nothing.
- For someone who doesn't do dust catchers, I have an amazing number of toys populating my office
Work - My first job was as a sign carver. I got the job the day after I graduated from high school
- My second job was working at a flower shop. I really liked it
- When I graduated from Simmons, I essentially had no work experience whatsoever.
- I’m proud that I am actually using my degrees for what I do now, although undergrad one to a lesser degree
- Had 4 jobs at once after graduating Simmons
- I've been working at the same library since 2000 and I'm not ready to leave
- I'm a "Lone Arranger" Archivist, which means I am a department of 1
- I'm getting better at acquiring interns (aka slave labor) and the projects keep getting more complicated
Things that I can do - or have done - I accumulated 95% of all of my emergency room visits by the time I was 4: dog bite, broken leg, and 2 facial lascerations. Those 2 latter were within 6 weeks of each other
- Went to Disney World with my dad when I was 12 (bribe for being left behind when my parents went to the BVI the year before)
- During the summers of 1989 and 1990, I went to Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.
- I visited England when I was 13. My mother and I went
- I was an exchange student in Germany for a month when I was 17.
- My dad gave me a trip to Europe as a graduation present from college. I spent 5 weeks in ...many countries
- Learning how to say No and otherwise allowing myself limitations, which is tough when it means not being able to help someone to do [Foo].
- Having scary/irritating/confrontational/adult conversations without freaking. I'm not at 100$, but I'm getting there.
- I've had articles published in the regional archivist group newsletter- 3 times (!)
- I overcame the lactose intollerance last year (thanks to Lactogen)
- Boston traffic doesn't scare me anymore
- Drive stick shift (and prefer it)'
- Met 3 members of the Firefly/Serenity cast: Alan Tudyk in NYC after Spamalot and Morena Baccarin and Sean Maher at a Serenity pre-screening in 2005. I want to meet them all.
... or not (yet) - I've never been to California.
- We still need to go on a honeymoon. Somewhere tropical.
- The house we live in is not ours. I very much want to own a house, but not this one.
- I also want to get a hybrid car. Someday.
- I'm still not ready for kids
- The perfect pair of shoes has yet to be found. I've come close.
- Rated all the music in my itunes. I will, though.
Hobbies & Prefered distractions - I have a Honda Rebel 250 motorcycle (that's new since the last list, woot!)
- I taught myself how to knit in college
- My current favorite distraction is using watercolors to make minature paintins and/or greeting cards
- With any luck, I'll regain my interest in doing clay projects soon.
quiet_elegance and I have taken salsa dancing classes, which were fantastic.
- I've suckered my household into watching too many TV shows: Lost, Veronica Mars, and You Think You Can Dance being the most recent additions
- I am a Browncoat and overall Joss Whedon follower: Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity (soon: Wonder Woman)
- Courtesy of my co-worker, I have a major love of fan vids (videos that capture clips from shows and set to music)
- When I can, I ride my bicycle or roller blades on the Minuteman bike trail
- Mystery novels remain an addiction I don't think I can beat
- Favorite authors at the moment include: Laurie R. King, Jim Butcher, Lauren Henderson, and Kim Harrison
- I can track slices of my life by who I was listening to at the time and who my female music idol was: Age 4-6: Olivia Newton John ( via Grease), grade school- Pat Benatar, late ju. high- Suzanne Vega, high school to college- Indigo Girls, Concrete Blonde, and Tori Amos, College to now- Ani Difranco
- I can thank
purple_terror and
lifecollage for my introduction to Boston funk bands.
- When I’m alone in the car, I sing along really loudly
- I love making pies. I'm proud of my crust making abilities
- I still love to listen to books on tape (a primary activity in the pre-tv days), particularly Tolkein.
- Sushi is possibly the best thing on earth. (Spoken like a true, late convert)
- This space intentionally left blank. I'm sure I missed something!
