Today's Sin Fest- ahhhh, today makes up for the preachy days by a lot.
In other news, I have now seen Citizen Kane, courtesy of [personal profile] woodwardiocom and his laserdisc player. Woo, laserdisk! I see now why it was an icon of cinematography. However, after discussing it with folk afterwards, I really want to see its contemporary, Casablanca again and soon. I have a copy, so it's just a matter of me forcing myself away from West Wing.

Now that you've seen it, I'll bring this up: one thing about Citizen Kane that isn't mentioned much is its gigantic influence on comic books.

Think about it: that opening shot, thru the sign and then down into the building, opened up the notion of just what perspectives could be used. The scene with his wife doing the jigsaw, and him standing next to the walk-in fireplace, likewise allowed artists to create distorted yet realistic perspectives.

Even leaving aside the story (which, of course, one can't do for long), Citizen Kane was a visual frontier work.

I agree. Kane does all kinds of camera tricks that, literally, no one had ever done before. When we watched it in film class the professor had to keep stopping and backing up to make us notice things because so much of that has become standard tropes of modern cinematography that we simply don't notice them anymore.

I don't think I've ever seen the entirety of either of these movies. *laugh*
