4:00 I notice my cell is dead, so start charging it, leaving it at work overnight

4:10 The heavens open

4:29* The heavens chill and I decide I can venture out and towards home

4:33 I catch that train!! Wow! I might make it!

4:55 We sit in the tunnel

5:01 We arrive Alewife and of course the bus is gone.

5:25 The less optimal 5:15 shows up. Hm. I make a tactical error and decide to wait the 5 minutes for the 5:30

5:37 The 5:30 bus leaves

6:10 Arrive Lexington, go to CVS (who fuck up my perscrip... they don't have it, but it's on the books. ??? Then finally hit some luck when video store has a title I want

6:30 Arrive home. Only a full hour late.

*I have come up with a formula. If I leave work at exactly 4:30, I will be too late to catch the 5:00 bus home. If I am even a few minutes before that critical moment, I can be up to 10 minutes early. I love the T. Not.

Now we present the Kingston Trio...

From: [identity profile] carpdeus.livejournal.com
Spoken intro:

"These are the times that try men's souls. In the course of our nation's history, the citizens of Boston have rallied bravely whenever the rights of man have been threatened. Today, a new crisis has arisen. The Metropolitan Transit Authority, better known as the MTA, is attempting to levy a burdensome tax on the population in the form of a subway fare increase. Citizens, hear me out! This could happen to you..."

Now let me tell you of the story of a man named Charlie
On a tragic and fateful day
He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family
And went to ride on the MTA

Well did he ever return, no he never returned
And his fate is still unlearned
He may ride forever beneath the streets of Boston
He's the man who never returned

Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Square Station
And he changed for Jamaica Plain
When he got there the conductor told him one more nickel
Charlie couldn't get off that train

Chorus

Now all night long Charlie rides through the station
Crying what will become of me
How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea
Or my cousin in Roxbury

Chorus

Charlie's wife goes down to the Scully Square Station
Every day at quarter past two
And through the open window she hands Charlie a sandwich
As the train comes rumbling through

Chorus

Now you citizens of Boston, don't you think it's a scandal
Now the people have to pay and pay
Fight the fare increase, vote for Walter O'Brian
And get Charlie off the MTA

Chorus

He's the man who never returned
He's the man who never returned

Oh yes, I remember that dance from when I was still living at my folks' house and working in Somerville. If the Lotus shuttle bus got me to Kendall before 4:45, I could generally get to Alewife in time for the 5:00 76 bus, which was significantly more direct than the 62 I'd be stuck on if I missed it.

Got a lot of exercise that year sprinting up the escalators, through the turnstiles and up the steps to the busway.

As someone who relies on the 67 from Alewife when I'm not on the bike, I think the message is: bikes are good, possibly even in the rain.

srl, who was out biking in the storm monday afternoon
