It turns out Sarah Michelle Gellar- Buffy- turned down the literal Star role in Stardust (went to Claire Danes). Tsk! She and Freddie have an agreement not to let work separate them, and it was apparently Freddie's turn. Still... Gahhh!!! Headdesk. No, really, sensible brain gets it. Don't turn into one of those Hollywood couples that sees each other only once every few moths, then divorces because you never really see each other and end up in a torrid romance with Angelina Jolie (Sarah + Angie, sitting in a tree... please feed Ang a few dozen cheeseburgers and chocolate frappes, plz). But fan brain is saying Sarah can act soooo much better than Claire, are you kidding?! Mind you, still haven't seen Stardust. Very soon, just not yet. Claire hopefully is good enough. It's just... I want to see a movie made with Sarah that isn't a horror story. Ms. kills-the-monster turns into the thing she was supposed to not be. It makes me irritated that she's thrown away her wesome role model image embraced the yucky and by doing so thumbed her nose at everything Joss did for her and for that matter the rest of the world. /fangirl shuts up...  Fangirl realizes that this role wouldn't necessarily be a whole lot different since the Star isn't what we'd call an ass kicker. But Gaiman!!! Sheeeeeeeesh.

Claire Danes was good, I thought. Sarah's still an idiot for turning down a role like this. I guess she likes being pigeon-holed into stupid horror movies. And like Freddie's making anything worthwhile these days, either.

I swear Sarah is suffering from the Wil Weaton/Wesley Crusher syndrome. "I have to prove I'm not just Buffy! I'll do it by being anti-Buffy! I spurn the fans! I ignore any further connection with the show!" and so on.
Interestingly, Freddie has *four* things in post-production. No idea if they're any good, but hey. Oh! Cool, I hope... Sarah's playing the title role in Alice, a story of what happens after she comes back up the rabbit hole and grows up. That sounds interesting.
Still. She coulda been a Staaaaaaaah! Literally.

The funny thing is, I think she got pigeon-holed into all those horror movies because of misperceptions of Buffy, like, she did vampires so now she can do zombies or whatever, even the Scooby Doo movies, you know? She's not breaking out of the Buffy mold at all, she's just doing stuff that's less and less worthy of "Buffy" and of herself as an actor. It's kind of sad, I wish she'd pick better projects.

Seriously, from the bits I've seen (trailers and preview bits Gaiman linked from his blog) Claire does a good job and moreover she has that faintly British accent down pat. I have a strong prejudice that all Gaiman stories should be told with just a touch of a Brit accent and frankly SMG would be ludicrous trying it.

Of course, I'm really not at all an SMG fan, so I'm probably prejudiced.

*looks at the coffee cup, now mostly empty*... I resemble that remark, but I think I'd have been outraged without the coffee.

I'd not considered the accent thing, but as I told isabel below, rewatching Buffy from the beginning again (at mid season 3) and I really appreciate the way SMG created the role. I've never heard her try to do an accent, though. Claire Danes is definitely more than capable of that skill.

Well, it doesn't do much for SMG's career to do silly things like that. Although I really can't see her as the star, but I agree why can't she get roles other than horror movies. I'm going to Stardust this week, so I'll reserve my opinion of Claire Danes until then.

Note the comment to supercheesegirl re: Sarah's next project: Alice! I've always loved that story, so I'm curious to see how that goes. Hopefully not too dumb when they're done, and different from scream-fest like before.
I'm in the middle of re-watching all of Buffy, so I'm soft on Sarah for now.

I forgot to mention that SMG is supposed to be playing Alice in American McGee's Alice, which is one of my new addictions. It's still sort of the same Buffy idea though and still horror. Will she ever do something like "Cruel Intentions" again?

I can't imagine SMG being better in the role than Danes, for two reasons. First, I thought that Danes acted well, was snarky and is physically attractive. Second, I tend to think that SMG lacks all of those qualities.

Seriously, Danes does a great job. It's also true that, despite loving Buffy verymuch I loathe SMG, so I might be biased.

I haven't seen Stardust yet either, but I really like Danes and when I saw that she was in that role I thought she would do really well.
