Another Ani Concert
Thanks to caulay, lifecollage, taurag and ariesd for braving a late night with me.
Last year around almost exactly this time I got to see Ani- great with child and exuberant over recent election hopefulness- do one of the happiest gigs I'd ever seen her play in the past 6 years.
Last night she was still giddy- had MAJOR baby-on-the-brain (but in a cute way) and hosted an appearance from her all time favorite public servant, Dennis Kucinich. I should have realized from the fervorous crowd outside the Orpheum when we were walking up that he might be there, butI was still surprised when he took the stage in between the opening act- a slam poet named Buddy that seemed to have foregone his meds. He really is a cute little dorky elf. I adire his beliefs on trying to make the world a better, cleaner, more peaceful place to live. I don't think he stands a chance, but I hope like hell that a lot of his ideas are carried forward.
With the Kucinischites stacking the deck in the crowd- it was a distinctly different feel than most Ani concerts. Much more resembling a political rally. Ok, more than usual when at an Ani concert. And they brought balloons that they insisted on bouncing around for most of the concert.
Big win for the night's set: lots off of Little Plastic Castles (IMO: her last really good album before she got depressed and almost all her songs started to sound exactly the same to me)
Despite this- and the fact she played Little Plastic Castle - with a horn player and Dennis shaking one of those little percussion hoozits with little ball bearings inside- I just didn't get into it like I have in the past. We had a constant back and forth of people needing to climb over us directly or directly in front of us. The balloons were hugely distracting. The dumb-ass hooting at awkward moments from the drunk kids as annoying as ever. Time for me to take a break, maybe, from theater-based concerts. It was only last month that I went to see Brandi Carlile and came away from that concert hardly more up-beat than this time.

Also, it was one year less one day: We saw her on Nov. 10th last year. Heh!
