Once upon a time 50 gig was a lot of space. Um, not any more. When my laptop was new, I couldn't imagine filling up all that space, but 2 years of picture taking, fanvid watching, and music ripping, and here we are. The external that we got around the same time, which also seemed so huge, is actually only 37 gig. This is my backup space, so on my to do list: get an external drive in the 150 range. It'll be the primary storage for... some stuff. I dunno what'll get moved over there yet, but something.

I know...I seriously thought that when I got a 30GB iPod, I'd never fill it up because I don't have all that much music. Well, my music library expanded to fit the space--amazing how we adapt that way, isn't it?--and I started having to pare down a bit.

Once we started getting SGA off of iTunes, we picked up a 500 gig external USB iOmega drive for around $125. The nice thing is that you can actually watch stuff from it directly.

I can remember back in the late 80s laying out a couple of hundred bucks for a 20 meg harddrive for my MacPlus. Progress, I guess.

Orders Of Magnitude

From: [identity profile] catness.livejournal.com
I was *just* having that conversation day before yesterday. "Check my math here. Did I really spend $300 on a 30 *megabyte* hard drive for my MacPlus? My music database is now 70mb. It wouldn't fit on that and that *can't* be right."

Ugh.

Meanwhile MizzA, I feel your pain. I just had to upgrade to a 160gb ipod, a 250gb external disk so I can listen to that same music on my laptop, and a 500gb disk so I can keep the music on my desktop as well. For backups I now have another 500gb disk on top of all 7 of my other 80-100g disks that I am constantly rotating out. It's nuts.

You can buy a Terabyte at Costco for 237 I think it was. Maybe as much as 273.
Don't go small. You'll fill it much faster than you think.

You might want to check out http://www.techbargains.com/ (available via LJ as http://syndicated.livejournal.com/techbargains/ ).

They track good deals, and there are lots of 500GB-1TB external disks available in the ~$200 range

As JB said, don't go small. You'll fill it, no matter how big it is...
