I may not be the best advisor in this: For me, Carvel cakes win both on price and on nostalgia, since that's all I ever had growing up. Especially in the context of a rollerskating party, I'd say it was an allover best choice.
Any of the others have superior ice cream but are more expensive, comparably so. Choosing between them is more about your personal ice cream preferences than anything else.
I have no sentimental attachment to any one company. I don't think we even had Carvel in Ohio- I just like the crunchy middle bits best and want to avoid blue decorative "frosting." Bleh. I'll probably get a Carvel to please you, to be entirely honest
*blinks* Thanks?!? There are Carvel cakes that have less of the frosting, the more sheet-cake style ones. This also increases the square acreage of the crunchy 'ants,' which is a huge bonus.
However, that would be one more slight advantage to the cakes from a local shop: not so much with the blue frosting. Usually, they choose a decorative topping that works well with the cake proper -- chocolate, nuts, Oreo cookies, etc.
