The old homestead [part II]
Mkay.
The executive version for everyone too busy/lazy/uninterested to read the ramble I'm about to go on...
Saw people, had better time than I thought.
I woke up 'round 8something... Dad put in a shower into the bathroom upstairs. He started fixing it up when I was a senior in high school, but didn't finish the complicated bits for said shower til after I was gone.
So, the whole hot water thing didn't work out up there. So, trooped down to the old bathroom, one w/ a tub as well, which is where I wanted to be in the first place. Habit or something.
I went on a walk with mom up a mile-ish to the fruit market. I also decided that getting that roll of film developed before the afternoon might be good, as it had some potentially good pics of M.
Unfortunately, we were about 2 weeks early for getting local good apples or peaches, so made do with what we had. There was a request from Dad for 4 pies. Well, we are having a party tomorrow. They won't be wasted.
Isabelluna was already here by the time we returned and after a bit of chatter went off to go shopping, as I mentioned yesterday/earlier today, there's nothing at home resembling useful for "nicer" shirts. TJ Maxx had some serious clearance stuff. I bought one shirt for 70 cents. And not a crappy shirt, either.
I've not had much of an opportunity to talk to Isabel for many years, so very good to catch up with her. asideWoman: I hope you meant it about that mix tape. Now I'm hankering for it. One of the things I found last night was a tape by a local band, Lestat, that Isabel knew and spent many an hour with. So, given she didn't have it anymore and I hadn't exactly missed it, let her have it. Although now I wish we'd gotten to hear more of it. Oh well. They're really not that good. Gothy-industral. Sort of manditory to be G-i with a name like Lestat
She took off early afternoonish and I went off to Willoughby and met up with some OU folk, particularly Kirsten and Venice. Man.... I wish they lived closer. I wish I'd had about 10 more hours to spend with them. Oh well. With luck, the ladies will visit Boston sometime soonish. Like all lovely plans made in the enthusiasm of the moment, I will not be holding my breath on that one.
observation: there are a metric butt-load of motorcyclists 'round this part of the world. I mean, I know it's a beeeauuuuuuteeeefuul day, but LOTS of bikes. Mostly Harley types, but many many tricked out, custom, whatever. At least one of the sporties had extra blue lights 'round the frame. Hanging out on the "downtown" Willoughby strip was just 'cycle heaven! I really don't remember this many when I lived here. Anyone out there able to enlighten me? Did H-As set up shop or start doing heavy recruiting? Anyway... wow.
I didn't have much time to get ready before I went to pick up Jenn at her parents' house. I chose one of my new shirts and black velvet pants, grown up shoes (like with high heels and stuff) and all other girly things that I tend to not wear so much. She and I met up with Nicole for Japanese. Ok, but nothing worth giving details about. Then went off to Euclid for the reunion. Thankfully, Jenn knew exactly where we were going.
We get there and it's packed. Walking up I was a little nervous. I'm really not used to making eye contact with so-called strangers. Living this long in a very urban area, you learn you just don't. Jenn and Nicole commented on it and I'd not thought too hard about it until after it was over, but it's true. It took a bit of time to get up to the front where we were supposed to sign in and get name tags and give them money. I did but then ate none of the somewhat scary looking bar snacks provided. Anyone remember adhesive cheese?! Well, there was a vat of it for I assume nachos. shiver
One of the big big suprises was Devon. he was in my home room for 6 years, as we were both at the tail end of the S-es. He was a pip squeak to put it nicely. Very short, very scrawny and tended to be a bit of a spaz and sometimes a complete asshole. Well, I didn't even recognise him when he came in: very short, spiky hair with blonde tips, a body that must require about 40 hours a week to perfect, waxed eyebrows and a shirt that looked to be spray-painted on. You could almost see the wave of rection when he walked in. Everyone was blown away. Wow. Carson from Fab Five would have sold his soul to have gotten a few minutes with him, I bet. Well, maybe any of the Fab Five for that matter. Teehee! Bet Dev could bench press Jai!
There were a few other notables- a buddy who I'd known since kindergarten, was in track and cross country- he was glad to see me (or is a super-fine actor). There were a hand full of others. I had the same conversation over and over with most of them
Do you live around here?
[Boston]
You? [answer was usually yes]
What do you do?
[tell them my gig]
Married?
[show off M.'s pic]
Kids?
[show them a pic of my bike in my affirmative response]
There was very little else- almost nothing past that point. I'd come prepared with plenty of pictures and trying to decide how much of my life I wanted to get into and found that folks just don't need that much info. If a conversation lasted 10 minutes with anyone it was surprising.
What was funny is that the "popular" people- the girls who had their hair teased out the there and wore too much makeup have simply changed their tarty look with the times. Overall, I think they were going for a Britney Spears look... but they're all 28, so I think it looks a bit... odd
By the time I was convinced to go by a very over-done Nicole and Jenn, I'd probably talked to as many folks as I was going to. My dinner companions did not have such a good time, didn't see too many familiar faces. I found that if I went to jr. high w/ them, I'd likely recognise them.
Nicole took off there and Jenn and I went to Willoughby again to help close Arabica. What a teen hangout. That used to be a good thing.
Now I'm here. Somewhat wired and with 3 more Spudnuts donuts tempting me. (I've only had one. Really!!)
Tomorrow should be interesting. Folks will come over to mom's and hang out w/ me for a few hours. Hopefully after breakfast settles in I'll give a rat's ass about the food for said party.

RE: Devon -- See, I told you! There's always one person who's done a complete 180 from the way they looked in HS, and everyone usually notices. From your description, I wouldn't have minded noticing him! ;^)
I had a lot of the same thoughts at my reunion, though I peppered mine with, "DAMN, I'm glad I got out!" But in all, not much to do other than relive old times and decide if I really wanted to try and keep up with anyone. The answer was a resounding no, for me.
I am glad you weren't miserable. Yay, you!
