Oh look, my favorite season!

It's about time to start prepping the garden barrels again! I was thrilled to see that the chives grew back on their own. Good thing, as I killed them in the house. And the creeping thyme has survived/suffered in the same way. Some new buds on the chocolate mint, too (none came in -so that was an extra bonus). For the stuff brought in, both rosemary and parsley made it.
I still have a monster aloe if anyone wants to take it off my hands. It's looking quite healthy these days.

Can I trade you your well aloe for my sick one? I didn't change anything I was doing yet it suddenly started to fail and nothing I've done has helped. Also Kfir is interested in germinating seeds and I don't remember how. Want to help us make a project out of it?

it's time to plant your lettuces! you can layer seeds in a barrel: carrot seeds with lettuce/spinach/radish seeds. the lettuce has hardly any roots so doesn't interfere with the carrots, and the radishes sprout and form bulbs so quickly that you'll have eaten them a month before the carrots are ready.

I was wondering about carrots- you think they'll be OK in the barrel? I don't love radishes, though. It's still kind way cold here, but soon! Eeeee! :)

Is it the same breed from the one you gave me last time? I was hoping to acquire one that doesn't grow up so fast, but yes. This is the same aloe that you originally gave me, by the way.

I've never grown anything from seeds before- this will be my first year. Definitely keep me in touch on the progress.

I don't see why the carrots wouldn't be fine in a barrel, if you have the space. the looser soil will be a benefit. if your chives are showing themselves, it's warm enough to put down the cool season seeds. cover them with a little soil, keep them moist if it doesn't rain and otherwise ignore them. that's kind of the convenient thing about direct-sowing things in the spring: they'll germinate when it's right for them to do so (the whole process being temperature and moisture dependent) so you don't have to worry about "timing".
