She's back and very skittish now. I went out with some compost, so gave her a handfull of strawberry tops for when she goes back. Maybe the babies were under the fuzz the whole time? I hope. We were convinced she was gone, so I put all jungle of other planters back- maybe she was spooked when her micro-environment changed all of a sudden. We'll see.

If this continues, I'll be tempted to get the Must Be Bunnies icon, which feels a bit late in the game, but rather apropos.

ETA (again)-- maybe just back for an herby snack, as no really- no babies. I guess I'll have to wait until the family smorgasbord outing happens in the oregano.

Matt noticed a bunny in my raised herb bed last evening. Not cool, bunny! So I poked her off (from far away, gently, with the soft end of the rake) and she scampered a bit away, but not far. Huh. So I go look-- hol---y--- crrrap! It's a mama bunny. She had made a warren for her babies whose eyes were still closed!
... well, crap. This means that 1. the barrels were not safe from bunnies and 2. my herbs are donated to bunnies for the rest of the season. No way no how am I evicting this little family.

Mother bunny in the garden

the babies
You can't see them very well--- they're nestled in with the rosemary and thyme, no kidding.
ETA: After last night's excitement, looks like they found a new warren. I hope they're OK.

Stuff?

mizarchivist: (Elmo)
*headdesk*
I hit the wrong button and lost my entry halfway through. This will be a very short version:
- I helped [livejournal.com profile] missdimple  move yesterday. I'm very glad I did- it went smoothly considering, but today is a 2 cup of coffee day what with the expected results of box-hauling. The second cup actually is helping so I don't necessarily have to hide in my office all day.
- I have a new composter, and it is awesome! I had hoped for an R2-D2 shaped one, like my neighbors have, but instead it's much more dalek shaped.  On further reflection, I believe the one I originally referred to as R2 shaped can be interpreted just as easily as dalek. If anyone has a better match for the square one I do have, I'm happy to entertain nicknames.
- Movies recently watched: Slumdog Millionaire, Up in the Air. Both left me with a bit of a "...huh" feeling, but both reasonably well done.
- Movie to see soon: zomg-IRONMAN!... just sayin'. Scarlet Johansson.
- Lexington was rather ghost-townish on Saturday since all the food-selling establishments, including ice cream parlors and movie theaters, were ordered to close. I expected zombies or tumbling tumbleweeds in the mostly abandoned parking lots. Aside from being thwarted from my ice cream fix, this water thing is a non-thing on the scale of bothersome things. Not so much for 80% of the gym-goers today. shrug. Don't know. Don't care.

Right. I have videos to make for work. Did I mention that the upgraded software and my computer are not getting on well and my computer will show its displeasure with a solid blue motif after a while? Yeah, not a good thing. Fingers crossed.

I didn't grow anything from seed this year. I just wasn't feeling it. Unless you count the lilies in the front yard that haven't peeked up yet. Today I acquired some barbecue rosemary, which is more mild than the standard. I also have 6 broccoli and 6 red leaf lettuce.  The mint's roots didn't freeze so it' popped back and is ready for mojito season. The creeeeeping thyme (must be said in Igor voice) is also very much alive as are the chives. So, when I planted stuff, I put layers of my own dirt in! The compost is finally paying off. Although the consensus is we need to get an R2-D2 pod for this year's waste.
My icon reminds me I need to find a new aloe. One that doesn't turn into a monster. Although if I really want an aloe, I can ask my next door neighbor since she has a whole colony.  Funny how I don't feel so run down and blergy after 45 minutes poking about in with the dirt and plants.

By the way- I'm mostly ignoring socializing. I'm feeling toasted on activities and crowds. No SOS. No Steampunk Fair. Yes to some cooking and reading, possibly a bike ride.  Maybe.
mizarchivist: (Garden)
My garden is quite amazing. I've been a bad plant parent to this current season and not documenting with pictures hardly at all. So not surprised. If ever I have 2 kids, there probably won't be any pictures of the second. OK, maybe not. But it feels like that ;)  I'm waiting for the broccoli to start showing signs of florets, though. Hmph! But the beans are totally nuts and climbing anything that stands still long enough to get caught in their tendrils (eee!)- They've got flowers now in parts, so edibles to arrive sooner than later. My Topsy Turvey (TM) is now out along with the homemade one- a drywall mud bucket with holes in the bottom - well, the plant is getting scary big. The "official" one was just planted on Saturday outside so it hasn't taken off. What I found so cool was that it almost immediately started to grow towards the sun. Plants are bendy!  Oh, and the red leaf lettuce has loved this rain so much. And there are too many bunnies in my neighborhood. Every time I see one near my garden I yell in a grumpy mom voice, but in the exasperated I still love you way.

[livejournal.com profile] lifecollage  invited me over for dinner last night, which was as excellent as I expected. Holy crap, is their veggie farm share huuge. I don't think I could handle that much all in one week. Especially since I don't have a chest freezer like she does (I totally would if our *&^%$ house's electricity in the basement could withstand the juice it would require. Trust me. It can't.) I need to see if I can recount a conversation we had about interacting with those who've survived a geek childhood and have the scars to prove it- the bit in question was about why it can be so damn hard to get proactive conversations/actions from these very lovely people. Anyway- I know I'm not up to the task of the recounting and pondering at this point, but I want to so this is the bookmark for later.

I got home in time to watch week 2 of Dancing. I think last week was a bit stronger (the whole first week adrenaline), but I'm ever so pleased to see choreographers back, particularly Shane Sparks. Yay, the dancing!

So, I'm going to Wisconsin for work in a week and a few days. For one reason and another, I need to get a pedicure before I return home, and I managed to find a relatively close salon and got the appointment. I love the interwebs! Thank you Google Maps. I'm fixated on trying a gothy French manicure style: black with white tips. How very Druscilla, eh?

This weekend's plans are going to be awesome, I think. If all goes according to plan, I'll have sushi with [profile] quiet_elegance  on Friday. Until I started going to Teppenyaki with him and sitting at the sushi bar, I thought their fare was pretty ho-hum. Now I love it. But really, it's all about spending time with q_e- getting out of the usal distractions of being in the house. /schmoop. And Saturday is going to be non-stop. As always: diner for breakfast with [profile] purple_terror  with the requisite snark given and taken from our favorite waitress, Grammy. Then the long anticipated pool party. Looking at the weather makes me a bit sad, though, as it looks to be a bit chilly and almost certainly damp. Meh. I depend on the finer weather to keep me in what is otherwise a seething horde of humanity. Dinna want to be stuck inside! Let's hope things change because I want to see the spinning. And I want to see [livejournal.com profile] weegoddess  and everyone else, but especially our Actual Size redhead. The end of the evening will be at the charity screening of Serenity at Coolidge Corner: Can't Stop the Serenity- all proceeds go to Equality Now. They're starting the screening this year with Dr. Horrible, so bonus. Since it's a midnight screening, I suspect I'll be doing a whole lot of nothing on
Sunday.

ETA:
Oh! And I almost forgot that I have to thank [livejournal.com profile] jasra  (again) for pointing me towards greasemonkey for Firefox and facebook purity. I had been spending a lot of time being irritated with otherwise lovely people who kept spamming me with their effing quiz results and application crap. So. Don't. Care. That add-on blocks all that. Thank you, internet gods for this! I'm clearly not the only one spending more time on FB (and probably Twitter, which I still only stalk via RSS) because when once not that long ago I'd have to page back quite a bit to catch up after being gone for many hours/ a day, I sort of don't have to, however I really do with FB. Well, hey. FB for the mini posts, LJ for the more thoughtful commentary. I hope!

mizarchivist: (ZeArchivist)
I feel like I'm slowly slipping into other avenues- maybe not so slowly slipping? Good alliteration, though.
This past week, I realized that I could follow twitter feeds with RSS. This means I can stalk some of my preferred geeky celebs without actually participating in Twitter directly. It's very much a slippery slope, as cool people follow other cool people and the list gets longer. I find I'm reading more blog posts of those I'm staking because other folks refer to them and I say "oh, was that good? I just skimmed that before..." Anyway- it steals away more of my time. And for some reason I haven't been in a posty-mood of late, so then I come back after a week gone and want to sum up a whole bunch of stuff, which possibly isn't very interesting to read, but here we go again.

Movies- Wolverine: entertaining but not memorable. Star Trek: like almost the rest of the universe, I thought it was great. Wil Wheaton (Whenever I say that I say it like Stewie Griffin does) just wrote a great review via Suicide Girls' site. Wil particularly talks about the difference between Lucas doing new things with Star Wars and Abrams doing this new Star Trek and I absolutely agree: Lucas shits on his previous work and disparages us for loving said early work. Abrams, on the other hand, is extremely respectful and chose a path that allows the old to stay as it is but still tell new stories. Hugs n' kisses for J.J.

Teaching- I had a successful time teaching off site at my boss's church last Thursday. I left really early in my rented Prius (for a car that runs on smug, it is actually fun to drive although I wish it could simulate more engine noise at higher MPH. "what... I'm going 75 already?!") -I normally have the venue deal with food, but this time seemed easier to do myself, and I think in this case more cost-effective. The actual teaching isn't very surprising anymore- the syllabus hasn't changed drastically for over a year.

Garden- The morning glories are popping up all over in the rose bed. I transplanted a huge number into other parts of the yard and into pots that I'll put next to the ugly chain link fence. I cleared the bed entirely, but now more babies are coming up. Do not doubt that these are invasive. I think [profile] purple_terror  referred to them as Darth Glories, but I forget why now. I promise you it was funny, though. I've been remiss in taking any picuteres - Is the second season of gardening like having a second child? Inevitably fewer pictures although you're still enjoying the process? That was rhetorical

Mom! She will be visiting at the end of July. I plan on having a rollerskating event for her- more details later once I get RollerWorld booked.

Superficial silly stuff: I'm really pleased with how much my hair's grown in the past few months. I've also been successful in continuing to go to the gym 3x/week. Good thing, too, since the busy thing and the rain has kept me from being on the bike path as much as I'd like.

I feel like I've been really busy but I don't have a whole lot of stuff on my calendar to show for it- not really. Little things add up, as usual. I am looking forward to a birthday party tonight and a house rewarming tomorrow. Also there's this theory that I'll go see [profile] shut_it_already  play football tomorrow as well.  -- OK. I think that's enough for now. :)

So, let's see.
Friday- there was mostly just wandering around. There was also a lovely flurry of phone calls and texts- thanks! We did a fair bit of hipster-spotting and sat in Central Park a bit before returning to Brooklyn for a rest before evening festivities. Dinner at Morimoto was as excellent as you might expect. I'll let [profile] purple_terror  do the write up, though. It certainly ranks up there with best meals ever. It also took 2 1/2 hours to experience, so there was no post meal entertainment.

Saturday- bummed around, made breakfast with my host, Joe.  We both went out around the same time, bought almost precisely the same ingredients (down to size of egg and brand of cream cheese), and returned at the same time to a bit of amused bafflement. Joe thought perhaps I'd have to take home a lot of this food, as there was just so much of it. Not a real concern, though. Aunt Leslie and Uncle Giles were also in residence, plus p_t, YT, and the other half of the hosting, Susan.
That afternoon, my relations from upstate NY arrived and it was quite jolly. My cousin, Katherine, has been accepted to Yale but she never thought she'd get in and had her heart set on an obscure liberal arts college in the middle of nowhere. I appreciate she needs to get to her own decision, but seriously! Yale!! The end of this week will see the end of the suspense.
Dinner was at Madras Cafe, by The Bowery. It's a vegan Indian restaurant (kosher, too?) - I highly recommend. We'd been there before and it's Leslie's favorite. She says it's just like eating in India. She goes there rather frequently, so she'd know.
Giles's show -did sets and lights- was pretty good. Obscure Gilbert and Sullivan: Ruddigore. If you've heard any G&S you know what it sounded like and for that matter about how the plot wound. The performers had excellent voices. The downside was it was an echo-chamber of a church basement, so sitting at the back was a challenge.

Sunday- Mostly just packing up, then off to the innards of Brooklyn to meet yet other cousins who'd moved to the city not that long ago. All 3 are my dad's older sister's kids. Pretty sure we'd not seen each other in about 11 years. We now have the goal of meeting up again soon and not because of a funeral. The return trip via a Chinatown bus:  rather torturous with no AC and it was well above 90 when we left. Also the double pane of glass I was sitting next to was filthy from condensation and about half a gallon of trapped water sloshed the whole way. Bolt next time anyone? Oh yes.
Gardening! Today's gardening activities )

I managed to sprout 17 bean plants. This is a bit excessive, but I'm not about to kill them off- These are the kinds of beans that actually do need poles to climb. Anyone interested in a few of them?
By the way,[info]sweetmmeblue : I actually do have some left over beans if K. wants to try sprouting a few. If he covers up his growing container with plastic wrap inside, he'll see them sprout in a week and then they take off.

mizarchivist: (Garden)
So, yesterday, I had bean sprouts. Hadn't really even broken out of the ground as such- just peeking. I wasn't home last night until late, so didn't check on any of them. Well! The beans are now over an inch tall. I'm entirely flabbergasted. I have about a dozen plants and may well need to find a home or two, as that's a lot of beans. Mom says they're the best, though.
My tomatoes have also started to come up and I know there's way too many of those, too. Wow! I actually can grow things from seeds- I was not convinced of this until this week, really.

Ok, also- zomg, skating tonight! Eeeeee!

mizarchivist: (Spiffed 2)
First a bit of meta- I think that Facebook is stealing my one-off bits of commentary that could have been a post, but is really just a few lines of "hey, a thing!"  I guess this shouldn't surprise me.

So- the good things:
- 3 day weekend
- Rollerblading! I went out for the first time on Friday during my day off then again this evening after work.
- Friday evening I got to hear (not so much see) Joss Whedon get a cultural humanism award from Harvard. Good to hear it all but really would have  been even better to see it, too.
- Helped [livejournal.com profile] woodwardiocom  and [personal profile] buxom_bey  with packing - That whole house purchase thing: wow! Yay!
- Amazing interns make me happy. One of the three particularly has zipped through a project that I had been first slogging through then ignoring. I'd keep her if I could pay her.
- First lunch outside today: it was a bit chilly, but hey, outside :)
- A significant collection was delivered this morning at work: the church that closed was kind enough to donate a very vurrah pretty pennies to off-set the cost of organizing and maintaining it. That sort of thing makes bosses happy.
- Speaking of bosses- she helped me make a decision regarding an ongoing project that is huge and rather onerous. I'd been going into a crazy level of detail (not that it seemed to be so at the time)- and now we're doing more of a "good enough" brass tacks. Given this is also an intern-assisted project, it'll be done in no time. FTW.
- Sushi + Repo! tomorrow
- Skating at Rollerworld Thursday (yes, do come)
- That whole going to the gym all winter pretty much without fail as long as I was in town/going to work: hugely paying off. Just about every time I see myself in a reflection I have this pause of "dude, that's me!- Go me!" Not that I didn't like myself before.
- In a week and a half I head down to NYC to see my uncle's latest production and catch up with an asounding number of family members. Oh, and it's my birthday 'round then, too. I feel like the birthday bit has sort of snuck up on me.
- Holy Moses, the plants, they are sprouting! About a week ago I guess it was, I put in tomato, bean, broccoli, and cucumber seeds. Oh, and carrots outside. All the inside seeds are coming up- I'm asounded- Perhaps this isn't as difficult as I thought?
-I love spring

Wow. That's a lot of good, nay great, stuff.
mizarchivist: (Garden)
It's about time to start prepping the garden barrels again! I was thrilled to see that the chives grew back on their own. Good thing, as I killed them in the house. And the creeping thyme has survived/suffered in the same way. Some new buds on the chocolate mint, too (none came in -so that was an extra bonus). For the stuff brought in, both rosemary and parsley made it.
I still have a monster aloe if anyone wants to take it off my hands. It's looking quite healthy these days.

Um halp?

mizarchivist: (Garden)
I have too many plants! It's crazy.

I brought in a sample that hopefully will last a while (parsley, chives, rosemary, creeping thyme, mint, [livejournal.com profile] asciikitty 's wedding lavendar...) The mint I broke into two pots. Oh, and the aloe.

I'm hoping to find homes for one of the mint and the aloe. And if anyone needs a bunch of thyme let me know. I gave the original plant a huge haircut before I brought it in.

Bounty

mizarchivist: (Garden)
I have a LOT of Cinnamon Basil. Anybody want some?
Anybody have a notion as to what particularly it'd go with? I'm thinking it'll not be pesto.

ETA: Also, Black Crim tomatoes- do they ever have any red? There's over half a dozen on the plant now and none of them are showing signs of red, so I've been leaving them alone.
ETA2: Further, I have a LOT of thyme. Would it were time. If anyone is in need of this herb, I have much to spare.

ETA3: I'll be going to Diesel this week, so that's a good place to trade off.
mizarchivist: (Jess & irises)
Stuff that's happened of late-
  • Saw Dark Knight yesterday. Yep, that was pretty damn good. Hellboy was last Monday (supposed to be DK, but it sold out on a Monday night.. HB was pretty but less interesting with the plot.) The trailers before DK included Watchmen. Woah. Yes, please.
  • Going to see Shakespeare in the Park tomorrow and Theater @ 1st on Saturday.
  • Tickets for SYTYCD tour go on sale Saturday as well. (zomg!) Speaking of my favorite summer tv obsession- we're down to the top 6 dancers this week. Sweating bullets time. For those who pay attention, I'm estimating Katee or Twitch for winners now that *SOB* Will's been nixed. I'm sort of hoping for Twitch, as I adore that boy. Ok. I think I'm done for now on that compulsive fannish babble.
  • I've been somewhat slavishly looking for vids from Comicon- mostly via Whedonesque and Dr. Horrible news feeds. There was also a link via Wil Wheaton's blog. He's rockin' the beard-look these days. I'm liking it. Dare I say it- makes him a bit more edgy. (ducks and covers in case he kills me from afar) -- for those who don't get that last reference, it's a thing for him. He goes on at length in his first book about that descriptor
  • Non-cultural things: Garening- Saturday I swapped out bee balm from barrel to a spot in the yard. Hopefully a border of mulch will keep the weedwhacker at bay. The empty barrel is now filled with transplanted basil, which was over-crowded, a new red pepper, the too-long squished lavender, and some chives. Funny how all that fills up a barrel quickly.
mizarchivist: (Garden)
So, the roots on my bee balm were not strong enough to hold up against the storms. They were quite leggy and I don't think their root structure was ever extensive enough to deal with being 3 million feet tall. I have been cutting away at them for a while, hoping if I trim them back they'd fare better. Not after yesterday. Also, the onion bloom finally bent in the middle of its stalk, so I pulled it up. The bees had been having fun with it, so I left it alone until my hand was forced.

This one was taken 8 days ago. I didn't get a chance to get evidence this morning beyond how far the morning glory grew
lots of pictures )
The question is: what should I put in where the bee balm lived? I have 3/4 of a planter!
Link to Garden Gallery.
mizarchivist: (Garden)
Lesson learned in the garden today: Shake everything a lot before bringing produce in. The lettuce got so excessively leggy that I decided it was time they'd had their run. I don't think they bolted, but still. I had to grab some tomato plants before they stopped selling them. I acquired Black Crim and some form of Heirloom at Wilson. Also some cinnamon basil (and it really smells of cinnamon- bet it'd go well with strawberries) and some bush beans. Beans are now where the lettuce was. Tomatoes go in their own bucket.

The bee balm, aka alien flowers, have started to do their thing. I had no idea how the flowers transformed. Well, now I know. The leaves themselves are part of the bloom. It contiues to bully the hell out of its neighbor, the chocolate mint. I trimmed back several stalks of balm to give both mint and basil some breathing room. Oy.

The onion is really getting its bloom on- I cut away what was probably pretty wretched edible leaves- They got too big for eatin'. It was mostly an experiment. I don't really do much with green onion in cooking. I'll pull it up as soon as its had its fun with the flowering part. In about a month, I'll be planting garlic!
multiple pics )
Again, for the full kit & kaboodle garden gallery.
mizarchivist: (Garden)
So, in late April, I started off with the growing of things. It looked sort of like this:and now...
The lettuce goes RAWR. And that thing that is in the middle of it all that's -oh 3 feet tall: that's the onion. A blooming onion. Neat or what?! That really really tall stuff that's almost as tall as the onion is the bee balm that featured in the first picture in this post.
mizarchivist: (Garden)
Yesterday the roses bloomed
one of the first roses
mizarchivist: (Garden)
[profile] quiet_elegance came home with 3 rose bushes and a bunch of mulch yesterday. I didn't get a chance to take pictures, but they're also without blooms, so not dramatic- yet. They stand about 1.5 ft.- between  their height and the mulch, I trust our black-thumbed landlord and his weed wacker will not decimate the beauties. I'm very entertained, indeed I am. While he was planting, I was reminded that I married a farmer. "You've done this a few times, haven't you."
"Once or twice"
Next addition of our new addiction? A trellis, I think. And then another barrel for more herbs. In established plant news that nobody but me probably cares about, the bee balm is twice as tall as it was when I bought it and it has new growth- little behbeh runners peeking up 'round the edges. Methinks the rose in the middle of that barrel will be transplanted before the end of the season to keep it from getting strangled. And [personal profile] catness will be giving me tomatoes in a few weeks!!! I will probably need help consuming some of those once it's that part of the season- OK? Again with my wonder that I'm now a gardener. What's next- genealogy?!
mizarchivist: (Garden)
[profile] purple_terror and I went out and acquired half whiskey barrels as an intermediate step to gardening. One that doesn't require building or waiting for building. Also big bonus on being able to move things if need be. [profile] purple_terror came up with a clever sun shade, too. Sidenote: gardening is NOT a cheap hobby, just in case you were wondering. At least not to start.
Barrel 1 is the one that gets the sun screen and it has the bee balm, rose, and (contained) mint. There's enough room under the shade for a second barrel, which is good, because I think I'll be wanting it sooner rather than later.  But in the meantime, I am using the previously used stone-and-bucket structures as added gardening space. Barrel 2 is under some tall shrubberies and houses the lettuce, a sprouted vidalia onion, lavender, and room for more herbs.
