One of the fun things I got to do before Crime Fighter arrived was to tie dye some clothes, including what I ended up calling the Chrysalis -- well, I think for obvious reasons. We took it with us to the hospital and then I thought I'd put it on him again yesterday.
While we're here-- what's new, what's up-
FWIW, I am feeling remarkably more like me. I've been using the Moby Wrap the past few days- to walk down the bike path to meet Rock Star and
rintrahroars at the playground on Monday, then yesterday to the Smarket (..or for those who don't spend an inordinate amount of time around
purple_terror or me- the FarmerS market) by way of Play Time to buy some frames for the current art projects*. I did take the carriage with me, but that was to act as a mini shopping cart.
*Another indication of ongoing good health, the paintings I keep doing. I have yet to scan them yet, but they're in this style:
Crime Fighter is doing well. Clearly, as the motivation behind starting this post, he is growing as only an infant can. I would love it if he didn't spend most early mornings (around 4am-6 or 7am) crazy-active. Most instances I just stay in bed and deal with his flailings. This time I got up at 4:30, wandered around with him hoping he'd pass out, did the routine of feed, reswaddle (he will muscle out of almost all wraps except when
mzkero puts one on him), change, walk. Lather, rinse, repeat- until about 6:30, got to sleep for another 1.5 hrs before we got to do this again-again. Again, I've been Moby-wrapping him, which usually makes him sleep, so I've been doing so in the house, too. Saves my wrists some serious strain and gives me 2 hands back to do groovy things like make my breakfast or type this post. Yay baby wrap! And he's asleep again after a quick change/feed cycle. mwah-hah.
Aside from the crazy active, the photos now prove he's smiling. We get awake giggles sometimes, but they seem kind of random still. We have yet to get him to smile or giggle from an act we do as far as I can tell. It's pretty much self-directed. He is great at kicking now. I have a play mat with a bit of structure over it and a bell attached to it at foot level. I am pretty sure he doesn't realize that the noise is from him kicking. Soon? I'm sure. And the whole find your hands thing: he'll be a thumb sucker at this rate. I'm (still) OK with this, as it means he can't lose his comfort object.
Oh- work. I will be returning to work on November 14. My newest colleague, the junior level archivist, has been holding down the fort. The new student archive assistant started a few weeks ago and is doing exceptionally well. Assistant is a volunteer from last summer who's now in the GSLIS program (first semester), but has already been exposed to some serious archive projects over the course of this year. She's doing the double-major thing of archive/history (I think?) and I hope she doesn't try to do the whirlwind degree earn thing I did, because I'd like to keep her around for more than a year. I can't recall and I'm too lazy to look to see if I noted that my associate archivist is pregnant, due in Feb/March. She did the cost benefit analysis of continuing to work and it did not play out so as soon as I get back to work I will be helping the librarian screen new applicants for the position. I am sorry to see her go, but it is what it is. We have the opportunity to fine-tune the job description and hopefully get as good or even better match than the current staffer.
There had been a tease of a promise that I'd get a new office on the floor- with a window!!- but the tenants who're in there lost the new place they were headed towards, so this notion is put on hold. I knew not to bank on the tease. Our librarian, I think, didn't realize it's dangerous to get too het up about such plans until the old tenants are out and we're repainting. I'm hopeful, although I am saddened to lose some original tenants. However, they are keen on moving to a part of the world where their clients actually congregate normally, such as Roxbury.
I've still not determined all the details, but at this point Crime Fighter will have a friend come to the house to do the tending for part of the time and
mzkero is also on the roster. The friend., A., is working on a farm and working on graduate studies and he needs off-season work. I am hoping to continue to have him around until planting season. Hopefully by then the next option will have presented itself.
If you would like to be backup baby-care person, please ping me (again)- preferably by email so I have a more coherent record- so that we can talk terms and give you a chance to change a few diapers and see how things mesh.
Finally some queries:
For clarity, here we are in the hospital-
He is 1 day old....
That was yesterday...
(cue Thaddeus Hogarth... the interwebs thinks this is a very obscure reference, for I lack a link to the song)

- Did I loan you my How I Met Your Mother, season 1? May I have it back?
- Do you need any boxes for moving? I have a box of boxes on my front porch that I'd like to find a new home.
Post like whoa
The kidlet is SOOPER cute and I am sorry I've missed baby time with him. I'm on for Diesel this coming Tuesday I hope and if you could take a visitor around that time I'd stop by. Other chances would be cool, should they come about.
Sorry to hear about the office stuff; good luck with the interviewing and hey maybe there's a window office somewhere in your future.
Re: Post like whoa
Sign me up.
We should maybe have the boys come over for painting lessons- you can hold the baby, and I can talk color theory? If they're still interested.
I may see about going to Diesel next- I feel pretty effin' liberated right now with my ongoing baby-wearing and carriage maneuvering.
The office will sort itself out. I'm zen. I'm also not there ;)

Then again, Crime Fighter's version of objecting is generically several decibels lower than Superfly's, so I can live through the temporary grump I'll get at first, then he passes out. Might be you just haven't found the right carrier? The Baby Hawk style might work for him once you're convinced his neck is strong enough, etc.
