I watched Cabin in the Woods this evening. I don't normally do horror, but it's Joss, guys. JOSS. I thought it was very well done, but the big thing about gory/scary is that I have a hard time separating the scary after its over and it follows me around. Example: Would not go down in the basement to put stuff away just now. Nope. It can wait til the sun is up.
quiet_elegance did have a very valid point, though. We are immune, because we are not young. So, it's OK. Also, monsters can't hide under my bed. It's too crammed with stuff, and there has to be some room for the monster. This is my scary movie logic and I will not be gainsaid.
I will not talk about plot points here in case
purple_terror gets around to watching it sometime soon. I was pleased nobody even hinted at what The Big Surprise would be. Except... Kevin??

There's a whole raft of horror movies for parents (e.g., "daughter possessed by demon") out there now, which I will not guide you to, 'cause I like you.

I don't expect ever to watch this
Re: I don't expect ever to watch this
Not that I mind some spoilers. QE specifically said that there has been note that spoilers aren't as hated as they are assumed to be, that they provide more incentive to go read/watch the thing in question. Well, in this case- I feel like it's almost on par with 6th Sense. CITW's reveal is one you really want to find out during the moment. IMO.
Re: I don't expect ever to watch this
The former _might_ motivate me more but is more likely just to be a minor annoyance. Had someone told me the latter ahead of time I would have been seriously upset.

I did actually punch my friend in the arm when he said "okay, it's not scary after this point" and it was DEFINITELY STILL SCARY AFTER THAT POINT. You can probably guess when he said this -- after one type of scary stuff was over, during the breather before totally different scary stuff began, during the last part of the movie.
NOT. OKAY.
Also, I am now teaching friend the difference between "I liked it" and "I enjoyed it", because while I did NOT enjoy watching that movie at all, I respect & appreciate what it was doing; it was well done and I would recommend it to others who appreciate the genre and meta-commentary. So, I'm glad I saw it, I just wish I'd done it differently.
Still, nothing is as bad as "hey, my friend got an advance copy of this movie he worked on" and then it's the Blair Witch Project, which no one had heard of yet.... and we're at summer camp, and we watched half of it and then had to walk home through the woods. Nope, that definitely tops Worst Fucking Idea list.
Re: I don't expect ever to watch this
As opposed to deaths of characters. That is NOT a spoiler I enjoy and I've had that done for all kinds of literary works and movies. Also, given how much stuff there is to read/watch/enjoy out there, the chances are high that someone hasn't gotten around to YOUR personal favorite that you want to talk about.
I did manage to watch Citizen Kane without knowing what Rosebud was, and I know that improved my opinion of the movie. Andy had it spoiled and hated it.

But what about this?
And this?
Oh man, if there are those, then THESE would *really* suck.
And that's why I have to sleep with the hall light on when Megan's out of town. :)

I spent most of my childhood running down winding halls I couldn't see ends of and leaping into bed. Of course all closet doors must be firmly shut. :P

Gotta say - if had been played for laughs, I might have seen it. As an actual horror movie? NO EFFING WAY. That is years' worth of nightmare stuff, right there. I still wake up from variations on the same nightmares I developed as a kid, mostly involving things jumping out of the dark at me.
Also, I'm with John. I can't sleep with the light on when Matt's away, but I do sleep with a baseball bat where he usually is. Because that's where I'll reach for the safest thing. ;^)
