Scary

I watched Cabin in the Woods this evening. I don't normally do horror, but it's Joss, guys. JOSS. I thought it was very well done, but the big thing about gory/scary is that I have a hard time separating the scary after its over and it follows me around. Example: Would not go down in the basement to put stuff away just now. Nope. It can wait til the sun is up. [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance did have a very valid point, though. We are immune, because we are not young. So, it's OK. Also, monsters can't hide under my bed. It's too crammed with stuff, and there has to be some room for the monster. This is my scary movie logic and I will not be gainsaid.

I will not talk about plot points here in case [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror gets around to watching it sometime soon. I was pleased nobody even hinted at what The Big Surprise would be. Except... Kevin??

To a great deal I think it depends on whether the spoiler is incidental or central. To take a somewhat neutral example, we might say of Princess Bride "Hey, did you know that Billy Crystal shows up and he has a REALLY FUNNY incidental character?" that would be a spoiler but not on a par with (who the six-fingered-man is and what happens to him).

The former _might_ motivate me more but is more likely just to be a minor annoyance. Had someone told me the latter ahead of time I would have been seriously upset.

Fwiw, I'm half and half on spoilers -- sometimes I like watching the story build to it's climax while understanding the point (this is why I like re-reading Holmes), so with CITW, I did have the central premise spoiled for me, but not the ending, and I didn't feel like it detracted at all, BUT that's the kind of spoiler I enjoy watching assemble itself.

As opposed to deaths of characters. That is NOT a spoiler I enjoy and I've had that done for all kinds of literary works and movies. Also, given how much stuff there is to read/watch/enjoy out there, the chances are high that someone hasn't gotten around to YOUR personal favorite that you want to talk about.

I did manage to watch Citizen Kane without knowing what Rosebud was, and I know that improved my opinion of the movie. Andy had it spoiled and hated it.
