Kid Update at 2 yrs and 7 months
Once again, the icon is woefully out of date, but he's changing so fast, it's hard to add a new icon that'll do him justice and last as long as his current pair of shoes.
School- There was a bit of a shake-up at school this past month. One of the teachers pretty much quit in a huff. Crime Fighter had been in her class first, and he had spent time with her with the blended classes in mornings, so not just a random face we saw in the hall. She had not been our favorite teacher, rather abrasive and didn't get on well with her co-teachers. So, hopefully things will settle down now that she's gone.
Crime Fighter, while always doing his due diligence as a toddler regarding pushing boundaries, seems to be doing pretty well right now. The latest report from one of his teachers is that he will try to get away with not cleaning up his messes. When you have 6-7 other kids to wrangle, I can see why you'd give up after a certain point. We try pretty hard to not cave at home at least. There's been some transitions: some friends moving up to the next class and younger ones joining the current class. We think Crime Fighter won't get moved til September, though. We'll see! I think a lot of it has to do with space in the next class. The oldest kids tend to only graduate out when they go to kindergarten. September will be big changes all around, I bet.
Language/Cognition-No way could I relate all the funny things he says. The most frequent phrase said, though is "What's That!" Second is: "I'm scared!" The dark is 'cary. Wolves in the walls may not be scary anymore after repeated assurances that 1. it's just a story, and 2. we checked and there aren't any there. I guess "Why" will show up soon. He also will tell you that he's Big and Strong, that he's a toddler, a pre-schooler. He also Doesn't like a lot of stuff. Except when he does. He remembers things that I'd forgotten about. He'll bring up someone or something not mentioned by any of us in a long time, like a babysitter. He will also do pretty well talking to folks on the phone, which pleases the grandparents hugely. Some of his stuffed animals are now getting named by him, usually inspired by a movie/tv: Phineas and Ferb or Magic School Bus, for example. We have a frog named Bella (MSB) and a very small dog named Pinky (P&F). Best thing ever:
Me: "Hey, where's Bella??"
... pause
CF: [holds index finger and thumb up to mouth, as if he's going to pinch his lips together, but doesn't] and yells "BELLA, Wheh AHHHH YOU?... Oh no! Gone! Lost! Jump outta win'now." (Because Bella did that in the episode)
He will sometimes refer to the back yard beach (P&F ref).
This kid is such a fanboy.
So much singing and chanting, sometimes even making up new words to Brown Bear Brown Bear.
He's definitely memorized a lot of his favorite books and will tell you the name of the book or finish a sentence in the story. The days of short attention span theater are waning. Books with more words than picture are requested, like my stand-alone copy of The Three Strong Women of Japan. I did an expurgated version on first read, but then just read the second time with few impatient page-turns. Wow. We used to have to RUSH through all books to keep up with preferred page-turnings.
Dexterity-Well, he's easily an inch taller than he was at his birthday in August. Given the way he eats, I'm NOT surprised. I'm not really hovering at the playground half as much as I used to, even with the scary climbing. asciikitty's mum gave him an itty bitty bike with training wheels a few weeks ago. I am curious to see how fast that'll get incorporated into the summer's activities.
Life balance-with the dawn of spring, I'm much more keen to get out and do stuff. There was a night away, babysitters are lined up for several events in the next few weeks. I'd love to make my lizard brain Shut Up already. I'm getting there. It's a struggle. Sometimes it's just a matter of stating my anxiety and carrying on with what I am planning on doing.
I could keep going. I will just leave this picture here, though.

We acquired a ladybug rain coat and CARS rubber boots the next day. We are ready for puddle splashing.
