The tapioca pearls I got from Nuts.com worked. I didn't even have to cook them for long- 10 minutes boil, 15 minutes steep. They are perfect. I can make my own bubble tea for reals now!!
Yeah- the stuff from H Mart was a RAGING failure. Rag-ing :P
My preferred flavor combo is equal parts 2% milk, coconut milk (aka 1 can), black tea, a bit of almond syrup from the bar, and either a coconut-pineapple juice or more recently limeade. The mango-orange juice made it seem too much like orange julius for my taste, but you might be into that kind of thing. Proportions? Pffft. Whatever works. Shake up with ice, then put that over a glass with the tapioca in the bottom.
Make sure the pearls are warm when they go into the cup. 20 seconds in the microwave if they're not fresh from the stove.
Further: given how much random crap I've discovered people put into bubble tea, learning to make it yourself is pretty critical if you give a crap about what you're eating. Some places I've tried lately ... ugh. I think they could give Starbucks a run for their money on empty calories.
I'd tabbed this back when you'd posted it, the better to follow up later. And I find it's much more later than later. Buuuut might there be potential for bubble tea when we next meet? Because bubble tea.
I'd love to see what you're using, how you make it, etc. It would be an awesome thing to be able to make at home and my previous attempts resulted in...sad.
