I feel it's important to document the first known attempt of my progeny to run away.
Age: 3 years 4+months.
Height: shorter than me
Weight: not quite 40 lbs
Physical limitations: can't quite maneuver zippers... or see over a dashboard... or tell the difference between blue and green.
Chosen outside wear: baseball cap, light hoodie (with a zip), shoes. (No socks)
Chosen accessories: bag of train parts in a zipped up cloth bag and a car key with Dahk Mater (Darth Vader) for Uncle's car.
Plan: To run away. And go to the farm to get a pumpkin, which will be happy. Then go to Andrew's house. [livejournal.com profile] rintrahroars will say it's OK. But don't worry, he's coming back. He sang the coming back song and everything.
Action: Actually maneuvered a bag 1/3 of his general dimensions filled with wooden tracks out to the front hall. He opened the front door and walked to [livejournal.com profile] fubar's car. And hit the lock button... And I pulled the plug and carried him back inside. We called [livejournal.com profile] rintrahroars who said Crime Fighter couldn't run away to her house, but maybe a playdate later? .... oooookaaaay.

We are now having a pre-bedtime snack and petitioning for a treat.

I can't remember either kid doing that at that age but I might have just blocked it out of my mind. Hope you are doing ok. HUGS

You're raising a very strong person there.

Kudos.

This may be the best thing I've read in the last month.

Thing 1 did sort of run away from me at an outdoor event once, but afaicr neither one formulated a plan while at home to run away from home.

I vaguely remember "running away" one time. I might have been five. I took a long walk along roads I wasn't allowed to walk along, instead of wandering off into the woods like I usually did. Eventually I got bored or cold or something and headed back. My mom just gave me hot coco. It was a pretty great experience.

OK maybe I should have said "run so far I couldn't get him". We had one or two episodes of attempted running in public, after which I put them on a leash, which they HATED. In order to avoid that they had to stay in sight. If they failed, out came the leash.

I'm a mean and terrible parent.

awwww. i feel simultaneously proud and sympathetic (of you, not him). And I like his priorities indicated by what he packed to take with him.

I chuckled heartily at your amazing retelling of the account and of its details. How amazingly precious, but also frustrating because you had to go retrieve the little escapee from the clutches of outside!

We boys do neat things.
