D*Con: 1st day
Travel here was a non-issue, yay. Although there were too many screaming kids on the plane- what else is new. It took us til about 4 or so before we could have lunch at the food court.
One funny moment going from airport to hotel: coming out of the subway looking to see where our hotel was on the map- a local looked at my Can't Stop the Signal shirt and Serenity hat and correctly pegged me as a con-goer. It didn't sink in that 40,000 geeks. That's a geek city. Bigger than the town I went to undergrad. Bigger by far than where I currently live. I'm hoping someone will see the Australia pin for what it is w/out prompting.
It took 2 hours to fly here. It took 2 hours to get our badges. That was something. Coming down the ramp when first entering the building, I felt like I was about to enter an abettoir. Seeing the queue once inside didn't make me feel better ;) But there weren't any rotating knives, so all is well.
Dinner- woah. French American Brasserie. There was consensus amongst the group that we had to go to one really nice dinner while here and that it seemed wisest to go the first night. Salmon tartare with creme freche and caviar. That was my appetizer. Wow. Unfortunately my duck confit was salty enough to make me wonder what the chef was drinking while he was preparing. Instead I had foie gras as my alt. purple_terror had it for his first course, and talk about amazing, but in hindsight a bit rich for me to eat all alone. Still. I managed. Crepe for dessert with some lemony stuff in. We rolled back and here we are - an early night. Our only chance to really get some rest for the remainder of our trip.
