So LJ just told me about this guest feature that lets me know who looks at my journal and shows others who I look at.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm also only 1/3 of the way through my coffee. My first reaction is distrust. Have you already run across this - what do you think?

I view it as the same as the stalkers setting on okc. I disabled it.

I disabled it instantly. Of course, my entire journal is f-locked, so I know who's looking at my entries. ;^) But I also don't want to be visible to others. Still working in public service, is I.

!!!

I know you can use "lj toys" to find out who reads your lj. It just seems...weird.

this. and i doubt disabling this here would make it so those using LJ toys can't see you.

That's correct

LJ Toys (and other similar systems) use an off-server method of tracking visitors so doing things to your LJ settings doesn't affect it.

"guest feature that lets me know who looks at my journal"

"the sound of many fans"

Wait... was that intentional? :)

I disabled it. While I would love to know who's looking at my journal, I don't necessarily want everyone whose journal or community I look at to be able to know I did so. Also, if anyone can make himself "invisible" by opting out of the guest feature, even if I did enable it I wouldn't have a full list of who was reading me. What's the point?

Since when you disable it you bidirectionally disable it you can have the old behaviour back trivially... so does it matter?

I leave stalkers on on okcupid, which is the same thing, I don't see a big deal with this either.

I don't care that much. but also, I don't tag any of my stuff, so it's harder for someone random to just "find" my enteries. I friend lock anything about work, in-laws, etc that might ever bite me back.

I hadn't heard about it but I went and looked at my settings and lo, there it was. I disabled it. Distrustful weegee is distrustful.

But thanks for bringing it to my attn. ;-)

I also hadn't heard about it. Perhaps only paid members got a notification? (My account is a free one.) In any case, I've disabled it.

Thanks for the heads up!

Like [livejournal.com profile] kazmat said, it reminds me of the "stalker" feature on okc. I have it enabled there, but I disabled it here. I don't care who is reading my journal because everything is locked up and I already know. I'd rather not have my footprints broadcast around.

Disabled it immediately.

Grr.

So far I've said 'no' to this option three times. Each time I've left LJ and come back, it's asked me again if I want it.

I guess I'm the pervert here

I don't care who knows whether/when I read their LJs. I want information on who reads mine. So I left it enabled.

Then again, I also leave anonymous commenting on and don't post anything to LJ except with the assumption that it'll end up in the Wayback Machine and/or on Google some day.

While I wouldn't say "pervert", I'm leaving it on for approximately the same reasons.

As there are other ways to track whether I've looked at your LJ, I'm not going to worry about LJ telling you I did.

And I figure that nearly everyone who reads mine does so through their friends list (which this does not track, on the assumption that you can see who has you on their friends list) so I doubt it'll be giving me any new information.

Yeah, see, and I am devoted to LJToys (http://ljtoys.org.uk), but somehow that's... different to me. (Maybe because with LJToys I know it's using publicly available information -- and not claiming to draw any verifiable conclusions about who is who, just a bunch of guesswork really -- whereas with the new intra-LJ feature I'd be giving it permission to track me specially? Or because LJToys is at least a bit more obscure and arcane... does it make me feel better that the people who use it are at least going outside normal channels to do so? Hmm.)

So I disabled this.

Another pervert, I guess.

From: [identity profile] kebbykate.livejournal.com
I decided to keep it, though I read everybody through my Friends List and I f-lock all entries by default. I would be curious to see who shows up to read my public entries, because they are meant to be PUBLIC--usually book lists and book reviews. I do click through to people's entries when I make comments.
