Gratuitous Icon Pic and General Statement

Look! badlittlemonkey  made me a new icon. Further provenance: primal_pastry  braided my hair at mzkero 's a few weeks ago and blm was kind enough to document for me.

Ok, and now the general and painfully obvious statement: I'm a word snob. I consider this to be a positive quality, but it does make for some rankling these days. I will abuse the language a bit with various lol-cat or text abbreviations, but it's almost always for humor's sake/with irony. The thing is, I think just about everyone who bothers to read this doesn't do this, but--- for the love of all the gods! If you want to make a good first impression, please use proper grammar and spelling. Even if it's just a new potential friend. Nothing turns me off faster than a casual "ur."
OK? OK. They tell me deep breaths help right about now.

And by the way, though I was bein' (I hope) funny... it says something about me that I couldn't figure out why casual references to ancient cities bugged you so much! I mean... is Byzantium just as bad? Or is it just Ur? What about Shangri-La?

Yes, I have the problem of reading "ur" in this way almost all the time.

I was quite startled to see my father using 'u' and 'ur' in the BBS-speak way. Then again, given that he's kind of handicapped, typing a few letters more or less does matter for him.

Any time that typing is a literal pain... I haven't a quibble with abbreviations, indeed.

While I invariably use proper grammar, I'm afraid that some people believe that I do not always use proper spelling. In general, as we English-speaking peoples have generally dispensed with throat clearing during normal speech, I take exception to the obsolete "-gh" former-phoneme. Specifically, I spell the various words "thru", "tonite", "altho", etc.

I do not do this with all words; "right"'s phonetic analog is "rite", which already has specific meanings which have nothing to do with any of the variants of "right". To avoid confusion, I continue to use the archaic spelling with that word.

Also, words such as "laff" simply trip most readers; neurolinguists inform me that it still actively looks like a misspelling, even to readers much more casual than you. Yet the "though" family, some extensions of "night", and even extensions of "light" (such as "hilite") can look correct.

I do this to further the evolution of the language, but if it causes you pain, I will strive not to do so in your presence.
