In the raging discussion: kids in social spaces that seemed to have been sparked sometime yesterday, D! made reference to the Five Geek Social Fallicies.
Everyone who has witnessed or participated in some or all of these fallicies at some point in your life, raise your hand.... OK, the rest of you are still in deluding yourselves ;) Joking aside, I freely admit to my own participation in this and have felt the negative effects a hell of a lot. However, this is the first time I've seen them spelled out and I thank the author most thoroughly for having the inclination and wherewithall to share it with the rest of us.
As for the kid discussion, I've been fascinated by the sociological study that it is and I expect a lot of people will find their trees shaken on both sides of the chatter.

-A GSF-related phenom I've noticed is what I call "secondary GSF fallout", in the form of keeping violations of the GSFs secret. E.g., if a lot of one's social circles are carriers of Geek Social Fallacy #5, "Friends Do Everything Together", and one is throwing an invite-only party, one insists on keeping it secret, so that the GSF5 carriers don't get offended.

Reading the.....debate on various journals was...enlightening in many cases - i guess i've always tried to take a middle of the road approach both with my own and others but the vehemence in some of those was eye-opening (from both sides) i wish i could do more with my community by having more child-friendly events (actually working on a group outing to ChuckECheese to have the din overwrite the conversation and give most of us relatively child free child time (kids at a distance) but my reality is that my weekends are either working or with my kids - i basically get four days off a month (every other weekend) and i WANT - i NEED that time with my kids - which usually means unless it's a child-friendly event, i don't get to go. 10 years from now that'll be different. i hope you and yours will share your thoughts on my post *shameless plug*

leaving off the kids ranting, which I've sort of only dabbled my toes in, I thought the writeup was pretty good and I've seen evidence of much of that. I'm trying to recall for my own self if it's been true and I mostly think I've fallen victim to the failure to understand why two people I like can't manage to stand each other.
