First off- it's quite nice to be able to catch up on the internets while still in bed. My laptop lives in the kitchen 99.9% of the time, and when I woke up it was that half an hour in the morning that is unpleasantly bright. Bed is warmer and more tolerable. Apparently I hadn't read LJ since Friday night, but still a manageable number of posts to get through. :) This is not a repeatable task in Facebook in which there will be some half-hearted skimming.

[livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance has been in Las Vegas for a union conference-y thing since Thursday. He doesn't do a lot of travel and even less on his own. I think the last trip he did solo was when his grandmother died and I couldn't go to the funeral. I, being a creature of habit and patterns, am not used to this sensation of him being gone. I am usually the one gone. It's very different. Next time, I'll make sure he packs the phone charger, as not getting to have a sedate conversation with him has been heightening the weird. Yesterday was technically his birthday. Not that he celebrates it in December any more - as I may have mentioned in previous years. He chooses to do so in June when it's grilling season and his nearest and dearest can manage better an actual birthday present that's not lumped or diminished by Christmas. He picked this trick up from my Dad who just hated December that much the year he turned 39. So, he was 39 for 3 months.

I got to hang with [livejournal.com profile] evila and [livejournal.com profile] shut_it_already yesterday evening. I'm doing some custom work for Mz. SIA, so she pointed to beads at Michael's. I ended up spending 3/4 of my meagre Christmas bonus. But, I have the prospect of several sales in the next 2 weeks. I got caught up in the fantastic options they have in "forged" and "natural" metal findings that I want to use for steam punk projects. I got a hideously designed cameo that I can use as the base of another mold for more elegant and steampunky works. Hee! Still no luck getting size 0 circular needles, though. I have to go to a knit-specific shop for that, but I am lazy. It can wait.

So, I signed up for Wave (thanks docorion) - but did so via my professional gmail account since that will make work-use less weird, so if you want to add me to your contacts or whatever, it's FULLfirstname dot lastname at gmail.

Also- I now have 8 invites if anyone wants.

I have spent a fair bit of time this morning combing through LJ styles. I found a few good ones, but I ended up going back to Chopsticks because all the lovelies I did find (Bamboo Dream and Great Outdoors being top contenders) did not include icon background/name text colors. Since I've internalized that as part of my reading, not having them there made differentiating from one post to another uncomfortable.

My question to you is: what's your favorite style and why? Do you also employ colors for people? Is there some logic to those choices?

To answer my own questions:
I chose Chopsticks because I like the header illustration, the fonts (I'll always gravitate to serifs over sans), the link arrangement for commenting doesn't look smooshed or awkward as they sometimes can. I wish that it didn't spread out the tags (which I like visible on my page)- once not that long ago, they were in a block not a bulleted list. I also want the tags to be all the same sized font. This detail on tag display is what drove me to look for new in the first place.

Obviously I use colors, since I just said so and of course there's reasons. If I associate a color with a specific person, I try to use that in the background. However, this doesn't always work out because one color would be horribly overused or I don't associate a color with them. In the latter's case, I look at what colors I've used less and try to come up with something that I can read and doesn't look awful as a pairing. Since I've been using colors since I started LJ 6 years ago, some people are now associated with a color set because they've been that for so long.

So LJ just told me about this guest feature that lets me know who looks at my journal and shows others who I look at.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm also only 1/3 of the way through my coffee. My first reaction is distrust. Have you already run across this - what do you think?

I have gotten on several social networking bandwagons, that's fine. I'm drawing the line at sharing RSS with anyone. Just... no. Google volunteered for me a short list of people whom I know - and like quite well- as people I am "following." - Uh, no. Not everything needs to be shared. If I want to share something I find on RSS, I have about 5 different ways I can get that information to them, thanks v. much. The reverse of this is also true.

Hopefully my recalibration of settings will make that go away. Damn internet, get off my lawn.

It's Dr. Horrible's 1 year anniversary. It's been a good year for the Whedon brothers & cast, I think: Dollhouse came out and got renewed, Castle premiered and is awesome and renewed, NPH seems to be coming up in the world what with his award show hosting, and The Guild is getting more popular and starting its 3rd season. Go, team! I celebrate with finally putting up a thematically appropriate icon.

So, since I had caught up with RSS yesterday, I was able to actually read Wil Wheaton and Neil Gaiman's tweets. C&P for easier explanation:

Neil: Wanted to write a silent movie this afternoon. It's all there in my head. Just learned I am off to the Cities for a needed haircut. Bugger.
Wil: @neilhimself Silent movie with title cards? Or silent movie with just descriptions? That sounds really cool; I'd love to see the script.
N: @wilw Haven't made up my mind about title cards yet. Can you be in the UK in September?
W: @neilhimself Sigh. I wish.
N:
@wilw I'll send you the script when it's ready for people to see it anyway.
W:
@neilhimself I bet you're going to have an incredible time writing it. I can't wait to read it. Thank you!

Now, I realize Wil is a celebrity and probably (I forget, but seems likely) that they've actually met by this point, but still. Neil's... Neil! There has to be a bit of fanboy squee going on- query about travel (to where Neil's going)? A promise of a script? Duuuude. That's so cool.

Some days I love being a stalker. And I still love RSS so much for letting me be a very lazy efficient one.

My garden is quite amazing. I've been a bad plant parent to this current season and not documenting with pictures hardly at all. So not surprised. If ever I have 2 kids, there probably won't be any pictures of the second. OK, maybe not. But it feels like that ;)  I'm waiting for the broccoli to start showing signs of florets, though. Hmph! But the beans are totally nuts and climbing anything that stands still long enough to get caught in their tendrils (eee!)- They've got flowers now in parts, so edibles to arrive sooner than later. My Topsy Turvey (TM) is now out along with the homemade one- a drywall mud bucket with holes in the bottom - well, the plant is getting scary big. The "official" one was just planted on Saturday outside so it hasn't taken off. What I found so cool was that it almost immediately started to grow towards the sun. Plants are bendy!  Oh, and the red leaf lettuce has loved this rain so much. And there are too many bunnies in my neighborhood. Every time I see one near my garden I yell in a grumpy mom voice, but in the exasperated I still love you way.

[livejournal.com profile] lifecollage  invited me over for dinner last night, which was as excellent as I expected. Holy crap, is their veggie farm share huuge. I don't think I could handle that much all in one week. Especially since I don't have a chest freezer like she does (I totally would if our *&^%$ house's electricity in the basement could withstand the juice it would require. Trust me. It can't.) I need to see if I can recount a conversation we had about interacting with those who've survived a geek childhood and have the scars to prove it- the bit in question was about why it can be so damn hard to get proactive conversations/actions from these very lovely people. Anyway- I know I'm not up to the task of the recounting and pondering at this point, but I want to so this is the bookmark for later.

I got home in time to watch week 2 of Dancing. I think last week was a bit stronger (the whole first week adrenaline), but I'm ever so pleased to see choreographers back, particularly Shane Sparks. Yay, the dancing!

So, I'm going to Wisconsin for work in a week and a few days. For one reason and another, I need to get a pedicure before I return home, and I managed to find a relatively close salon and got the appointment. I love the interwebs! Thank you Google Maps. I'm fixated on trying a gothy French manicure style: black with white tips. How very Druscilla, eh?

This weekend's plans are going to be awesome, I think. If all goes according to plan, I'll have sushi with [profile] quiet_elegance  on Friday. Until I started going to Teppenyaki with him and sitting at the sushi bar, I thought their fare was pretty ho-hum. Now I love it. But really, it's all about spending time with q_e- getting out of the usal distractions of being in the house. /schmoop. And Saturday is going to be non-stop. As always: diner for breakfast with [profile] purple_terror  with the requisite snark given and taken from our favorite waitress, Grammy. Then the long anticipated pool party. Looking at the weather makes me a bit sad, though, as it looks to be a bit chilly and almost certainly damp. Meh. I depend on the finer weather to keep me in what is otherwise a seething horde of humanity. Dinna want to be stuck inside! Let's hope things change because I want to see the spinning. And I want to see [livejournal.com profile] weegoddess  and everyone else, but especially our Actual Size redhead. The end of the evening will be at the charity screening of Serenity at Coolidge Corner: Can't Stop the Serenity- all proceeds go to Equality Now. They're starting the screening this year with Dr. Horrible, so bonus. Since it's a midnight screening, I suspect I'll be doing a whole lot of nothing on
Sunday.

ETA:
Oh! And I almost forgot that I have to thank [livejournal.com profile] jasra  (again) for pointing me towards greasemonkey for Firefox and facebook purity. I had been spending a lot of time being irritated with otherwise lovely people who kept spamming me with their effing quiz results and application crap. So. Don't. Care. That add-on blocks all that. Thank you, internet gods for this! I'm clearly not the only one spending more time on FB (and probably Twitter, which I still only stalk via RSS) because when once not that long ago I'd have to page back quite a bit to catch up after being gone for many hours/ a day, I sort of don't have to, however I really do with FB. Well, hey. FB for the mini posts, LJ for the more thoughtful commentary. I hope!

mizarchivist: (Kaylee Squees)
So, I already spammed FB with two bits of humor in the past 15 minutes, so I'm spreading the love into different formats.
So, thanks to my stalking Felicia Day's Twitter feed via RSS, I found this YouTube vid. Flashmob! Gold pants! ...Stop- Hammer Time.
This almost qualifies for the meta tag.

No freaky dreams about work/family. I don't remember any of them any more. I'm very OK with this.

Facebook- very long-ago friends, grade school era, have been popping up of late. One or two whom I actively wondered about and one who fell out of my memory entirely. Odd, but again, OK.

Bob (for those who forgot- the homeless guy whom I help out as much as I can. Usually with food. I was going to link to earlier conversations, but I failed to find them. They are there somewhere. It means I want to go waste time and improve my tags going back to the beginning)
Anyway- Bob's ipod, which was a gift indirectly from my mom who didn't need her mini anymore, was stolen a few months ago. I'd been hoping that I'd run across an unused one again and just be able to hand it down, but it's not happening. So, Ebay. He doesn't need fancy, but he does need a screen to see what he's doing.
I belatedly ask: If anyone has a mini or nano or even old school original that works fine but is just collecting dust, please consider donating it to this indigent man who loves Pink Floyd.

Gym: Still working, still feeling good. I was pleased to get 3.36 mi in 20 minutes on the bike. I keep all my old workout sheets and at least in recent past, I'd not gotten that far in so short a time. Go, me. I'm really ready for warm and bike path, though.

ETA: Failed my saving throw. I'm retrofitting more tags to old entries. This will take a while, but what possessed me to use "General Update"?! That's as bad as misc, which is always a dirty word from my archive processing perspective.

So, a friend posted a link to a Sister Salad video that parodies Sir Mix a Lot. It was so awesome, I went to go find more Sister Salad, and it continued to be watch-worthy. Sister Liz has a great bit of commentary about why you shouldn't read Twilight. A bit choppy, but she's adorkable. Because of the Sisters, I was exposed to Nerd Fighers! Note, it's a Ning community, which amuses me a great deal. Yay nerds loving who they are and making interesting videos. So, I joined up with NF and feel very optimistic knowing that this community and those sets of video bloggers exist.

So, since I'm the type that doesn't trust that LJ or the interwebs will keep a copy of my only journal- this thing right here- safe and sound forever and anon, I use LJBook to make a PDF. I have 3 years now that I need to get printed on good paper and bound- I'd lost track right around the time these folks got started.
It's what I do. I just need to remember to bring my flash drive in to copy all these and then decide what printer to take it to. :P

[livejournal.com profile] shut_it_already  and I were talking about resolutions and she asked what mine are. I hadn't formalized this as such. I don't feel constrained to the calendar year on improving myself, but what the heque.
Learn Italian
Go to Italy
Maybe get a new-to-me motorcycle this spring and sell the old darling
Continue to:
-go to the gym- ideal goal, 3 times a week
-go on dates with [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance
  - put money in savings

I'm actually pretty OK with the notion of not having a whole lot of stuff that I must do.

...until vacation starts.
In the meantime, I'm sharing some of what's been somewhat diverting. You might have lost your work ethic, too.
For [livejournal.com profile] deadwinter : a toaster he must acquire asap.
An open letter to Joe Six Pack from the Liberal Intellectual Elite of Pink Raygun
Movies I want to see: Repo, Quantum of Solace, Tru Loved, Dark Streets.
A Capella Star Wars filk. With wookie calls.

In the meantime, if you have something neat you want to share with me, please do so. 1 hour and 49 more minutes....

So, since it's the way I'm wired, I don't necessarily friend everyone who friends me. I may know and like them fine, but for whatever reason, I just didn't. This week I've had 3 people unfriend me- one I sort of know and two I didn't at all. To which I say in the Jack O'Neill way: "...huh:" a curiosity but nothing that makes me lose sleep.

So- I think the only four three left that I can't actually identify as people I've at least met in person are: [livejournal.com profile] elizabeth_black , [livejournal.com profile] girlmacbeth , [livejournal.com profile] librarian4eva . Assuming I'm on all of your default reads and you wanted to say hi- if we have met, remind me, otherwise I'm interested in hearing how you found me. I've turned on screening for comments... cuz. It seemed a thing to do.

Went to a shopping party this evening at Dress Barn.  I took advantage of the PURPLE that is popular. Most of what I bought is a nice plummy-eggplant. The dress I bought is just aDORable. I even got one of those odd 2-in-1 sweater-button-downs, but it may well be my  new favorite sweater. Also: grey, buttoned ankle granny shoes with black patent leather toes. They are totally awesome. Extra bonus: stayed in budget. Double bonus: all the cashy-money was a windfall of a sort.

I'm likely to use my health/weight filter more now that I've joined a gym. If this prattling interests you and you didn't see this morning's earlier post, let me know. Contrary-wise, those who are on and don't wish to be just lemme know. I expect I'll probably write once a week about it for a month or three, then lose interest in posting about it at all. That's what's happened before at least. I just hope to not lose interest in the gym :)

Also, [profile] purple_terror is made of awesome for volunteering to shuttle my must-take-every-day drugs to me. The ones that will soon be living in my purse- at least a backup set. (headdesk)

I had been quite keen on RSS as a way to clean up a lot of my regular read sites. However, the past few months, pretty much since I was teaching the online class in Feb., I haven't been so interested in reading the celeb blogs (Wheaton & Gaiman particularly) in that format. Anyway, that's my 2 cents on that thing there.

I'd thought I'd be social tonight.
No.
I will not be putting myself into a crowded, loud environment. Sorries. Maybe next week.
