I've had a lot in my head, but not necessarily been writing stuff down, so let's see how this goes. This is a post driven by the notion that I've not posted in a while.

OK- due diligence by including this social medium to my reminders to the world.
I have an Etsy shop!

In reality, what's there is a teeny tiny portion of what I have. I make clay objects: curios, tree ornaments, tins, jewelry, steampunky goodness, magnets, dragons, celtic knot work, flaming skulls! So if you're into any of that, I'm your girl. If you are interested, ping me and we can talk about what else might be available beyond the storefront.

For those who're familiar with my work, all products are things made earlier than this year. I have a hell of a backlog and that'll have to do for now.

On the subject of images, my day 2 back at work has been occupied primarily with my backlog of sorting and renaming my digital pics dating back to 2006 when I got my first digital camera and immediately stopped using regular film. I have always intended to make hard copy, but I also am not interested in copying every last little one, as such. Now I can use Snapfish to create the whole finished album with all the captions n' all. I'm setting up a folder in each year's folder that has best of best. My naming structure automatically puts them in chronological order, taking away half the work later. (90% of the information in here is crazy obvious for anyone who has spent more than 5 minutes around me, I realize- the archivist is acting archivey at her historical narrative!)

Similarly to the cobbler's shoeless children, I find doing this work to be a low priority when I'm at home. Once I'm into it, I'm hyper-focused until there's nothing left to sort. That usually means being forced to be in one room for an extended period of time. Therefore this sort of thing happens when I'm traveling, when I was stuck in the hospital I did a lot- and occasionally at work. Since I'm stuck without a regular project until we have everyone back in the office (tomorrow), today was tailor-made for this activity.

mizarchivist: (ExecutiveEddie)
No surprise: being back in my office feels remarkably like I've never left. I can't really get rolling on anything major until my colleague comes back from her grandfather's funeral (Wednesday). There's a lot in and I don't know what's up. Best to just wait and see. It does mean I can pretend that the office is all mine for the first 2 days, which is really a great thing. [livejournal.com profile] lifecollage came for lunch, which was excellent. We crammed about 2 hours of conversation into 45 minutes. Having our occasional lunches means the world to me, so being able to have that back is a serious plus to being back in the office. My inbox is already sorted. I didn't really have anything major waiting for me like I would have if I was just gone on vacation for a week or so.

Last night I was anxious and negative. Mom called to see what I was going to wear today and I angsted about how I haven't bought any new clothes in who knows how long and waaaah waaah waaaah (so she went shopping for me). Apparently she also arranged for me to have a package waiting for me at work for my first day back, but sadly, it has not yet arrived. So I'll have it for my second day back. So, even when one is the mom, having your mom be super-mom at you is sort of made of awesome. Very much reminiscent of going away to camp and getting a care package.

I got one call from Ariel asking how the stroller works early in the day- and at least at that time, all was well. I'm choosing not to call to check in. He's fine. They're both fine. It's fiiiiiine.breast feeding thing, short, but not everyone cares. )
Speaking of Crime Fighter: Fun developmental bits-  He found the Baby In The Mirror not that long ago (a week or so?)- I'd been trying: stopping in front of the mirror, waiting, but he was pretty meh about what I was doing until maybe last week or so. Now he lights up and smiiiiles! Then he'll act all coy and crazy-adorable. Yesterday was a huge breakthrough: He reached out and tried to touch the reflection! So cool. Watching him learn how to be a human is more fun than I was expecting. It makes me re-evaluate the little things like eye-hand coordination and object permanence.

[livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance is still working on finding his next gig, which may be complicated by the bit where there's a holiday next week. He's having a somewhat hard time dealing with the grind of constantly being under-employed. Except when he's not. There have been a few weeks where he worked a full week with some overtime, then went to teach out in Millbury 4 nights of that week. It will be OK, but not yet. In the meantime, he's focused on a quick gig for [livejournal.com profile] ahf and [livejournal.com profile] caulay. That will roll into supplies for [livejournal.com profile] mzkero's project, which is the basis of our carpentry/kid care swap, so kind of really important.
(A hiccup in baby care is that Ariel's gotten a full time job with benefits, which is fantastic because benefits is sort of a requirement in life, a thing I'd not be able to offer (duh). But it means that a go-to care provider is no longer default. Possibly occasional care, but I'm going with "not available" as it's easier to plan that way for the moment. )
Anyway- In talking to lifecollage at lunch about this and that, she reminded me that there's this thing- the Artisan's Asylum. Duh! That might be the solution he's been looking for on the issue of "I have no space." He has a few peripheral jobs that have been hanging over his head that would be good to have done, already, but he's always been dependent on doing stuff outside or have it be influenced by the cold and/or wet (finish work is tricky). So, this may well be the solution. If he likes it, which he may not. I'm crazy-hopeful.

So-- overall, I feel like things are reasonable to quite good.

One of the fun things I got to do before Crime Fighter arrived was to tie dye some clothes, including what I ended up calling the Chrysalis -- well, I think for obvious reasons. We took it with us to the hospital and then I thought I'd put it on him again yesterday.

Finally some queries:
  • Did I loan you my How I Met Your Mother, season 1? May I have it back?
  • Do you need any boxes for moving? I have a box of boxes on my front porch that I'd like to find a new home.
Um, how did it get to be almost noon?! Ack.

+ I am happy with my new office arrangement
o it was weird having said office to myself today after 3 intensive days of Office Mate.
- desk has some features clearly not thought through
+ can be fixed with moderate alterations and some wrist rests for keyboard and mouse
- QE has, in fact, been discharged from the job site because their Steward (our friend, A) is going on site Monday
+ There's a list of job sites for QE to check out, and there's a good chance he will be the Steward at a job. It might only be a few days gap
+ He'll be able to come to the sonogram on Monday
+ Finished The Hunger Games- the last third- in one swell foop.
- Concerns for the anxiety dreams those will generate now. I hope they do justice to the movie next year.
+ I have cataloged the new kid books in Library Thing. I know of at least 2 people who wanted that list. If there are others who'd also like to know what books I've accumulated let me know and I'll send the link via email.  I did board books only. I have to backtrack on some of the standard paper ones. (When it's not 11:30 and I'm freezing)
+ x infinity: congratulations NY State for joining the marriage equality club.

OK- regarding previous query re: rich vs. not rich entry options. Seems to be an issue with Firefox. Using Chrome now and I have the Rich Text tab back. Feh.
While I was fiddling with wtf was going on, I lost access to my old view option, Dystopia. I really liked Distopia, and once I clicked off it to see if that was the problem, it was removed from my options. I object.

Anyway- At least Chrome works for my more fine-tune posts. (Yes I could do HTML, but .....ech. That's work that takes the fun out of posting)

I managed to do reasonably well at the conference. I now have the self-mandated task of revising our disaster plan. We have one that's ... ish/ok, but I think we can do better. Particularly since COSTEP exists now, which it didn't last time I revised. It fits in with the rewrite for the policy & procedure manual anyway. I also helped review resumes for those who needed it (mostly students). As usual, some are good, some are hopeless. I'm extra interested since we'll be hiring mini-me sometime next month.

One of the books for this next club read/discuss is the first Maisie Dobbs. Apparently the first time (and last) I read it, I was in Cancun. That was a bit of bittersweet realizing that. I'd really love to be on a beach, but that sort of place is a bit more interesting when you can drink the froofy drinks. Also, I still don't have a servicable suit. Something to fix soon. Just not today. If I don't find a reasonable one at TJ Maxx, I will look for a set of men's trunks... OK, maybe I will go today. (hrmph)

My order from Firemountain Gems came in. I now have a special board for earrings, which I've put pendants and earrings on. There's also a raised divider board for pins and more pendants. Each board has its own tray. All my jewelry currently fits in this with room for my celtic knots - there are several of these, although I can't quite get away from making most of them in cool/blues. If all goes well, I'll have more product shots after tomorrow night featuring mostly jewelry.

Less than a week now until Stitches Needles n' Guns. I spent most of my last craft days working on skull & crossbones medallions that can be finished to magnets, pins, or pendants. Some homework on Derby team colors may have some positive returns. Also, I remembered, oh yeah. Valentine's Day, so did 2 more (total of 3 now) heart shapes that once held Mrs. Fields chocolates (oh, like 4 total?)-- if anyone has access to those in the days to come, let me know.  I used up most of what I had for this show. Also, the Altoids Smalls are new enough I have very few of them to begin with.
I had enough forethought to dedicate any free time today to actual show prep- pulling everything up, packaging, labeling. I had forgotten how frickin' cute my little winged dust-catchers are. I'm basically bringing everything and hoping for the best. Not that I'm putting everything out at once, I don't think. Clutter = bad. It would be really cool if I could go to one more craft fair and yet manage not to do any new product for the hypothetical future one. I ... have a LOT of stuff.  I have plans to have a sale/clearance bin that may entice. The medallions at least are Etsy-worthy. Once this is over, I'll put up listings.
I'm just afraid that after all this work, I won't sell much at all. I don't think I have a concrete goal or anything. The only reasonable one I have at the second is to give away all my cards at least (I need to get new ones made that list my Facebook page). The Arisia success could be an indicator, or just false hope generator.
And just like me, I've already picked out my outfit for vending. I will definitely do my best to take some pictures for posterity.

Don't suppose anyone's planning on going to the show? It wouldn't suck to see a familiar face or two.
mizarchivist: (Eddie-Cake or Death?)
Definitely one of my favorite Arisias so far, I think. No major preoccupation on logistics/scheduling, although I felt like I really really really didn't stop.
Art show was gratifying and - gasp!- profitable. I feel like I hit a great tipping point as an entity known to the fandom community and the quality I've managed to acquire in the past 12 months and the choices of pieces to put in paid off, literally. All my cards were gone by the end of Saturday. I feel badly I didn't just bring the whole stack. Would I could retroactively inform the interested people I have a facebook page much more useful than etsy right now on activity.
The naughty nurse blood drive stuff went well, too. I haven't heard how well, but we must have come close to filling all available time slots. I participated in the Friday night sketch- I'm hoping someone posts a video at some point.
If anyone has pictures of me or of things that would interest me particularly from the weekend's fun, please email copies, as my set is woefully lacking in much.
Did I mention I need to acquire the bracer from Brute Force Leather that acts as a personal time travel device? That warranted a picture:
time travel device

The continued popularity of SteamPunk pleases me greatly. I had a lot of stuff I'd have liked to have bought. I might have the chance to get my time traveler next month if I'm lucky. I had sent a representation of the skeletal lady cameo mold to my benefactress who copied the original for me in the form of a standard sized altoids box. I have also requested rigid copies of the mold so I don't have to work so hard to get sharper details.

Tomorrow- no gym. I actually went to Bollywood class tonight. Also: voting. I don't lurve M.Coakley, but I'll vote for her. Another "better than the other guy" situation.
Thursday- Dad arrives for a low-key visit. Is anything going on this weekend that might be fun to take him to? I figure most people are in post Arisia recovery.
Did I mention how much I don't wanna go to work tomorrow?

I'm sorry I can' t make it to dim sum as planned, but considering the lineup of things I am planning to do today, that might be OK-
-potato soup (like a baked potato with the works in liquid form) for later
-curry for dinner
-prep cholesterol cookies
-something dessert-like for tonight, as yet undetermined
Also I really want hot chocolate and I'm hoping to do some more crafty things at some point. So, I'll have fun but I might forget to do nothing, as usual.
Oh- [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror 's present to [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance  this year : a new snow blower. It seemed good tactics to give it to him last night. Once I clear it with q_e, I may be trying to find a new home for a fixer-uper smaller snow blower. More details on that later.

First off- it's quite nice to be able to catch up on the internets while still in bed. My laptop lives in the kitchen 99.9% of the time, and when I woke up it was that half an hour in the morning that is unpleasantly bright. Bed is warmer and more tolerable. Apparently I hadn't read LJ since Friday night, but still a manageable number of posts to get through. :) This is not a repeatable task in Facebook in which there will be some half-hearted skimming.

[livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance has been in Las Vegas for a union conference-y thing since Thursday. He doesn't do a lot of travel and even less on his own. I think the last trip he did solo was when his grandmother died and I couldn't go to the funeral. I, being a creature of habit and patterns, am not used to this sensation of him being gone. I am usually the one gone. It's very different. Next time, I'll make sure he packs the phone charger, as not getting to have a sedate conversation with him has been heightening the weird. Yesterday was technically his birthday. Not that he celebrates it in December any more - as I may have mentioned in previous years. He chooses to do so in June when it's grilling season and his nearest and dearest can manage better an actual birthday present that's not lumped or diminished by Christmas. He picked this trick up from my Dad who just hated December that much the year he turned 39. So, he was 39 for 3 months.

I got to hang with [livejournal.com profile] evila and [livejournal.com profile] shut_it_already yesterday evening. I'm doing some custom work for Mz. SIA, so she pointed to beads at Michael's. I ended up spending 3/4 of my meagre Christmas bonus. But, I have the prospect of several sales in the next 2 weeks. I got caught up in the fantastic options they have in "forged" and "natural" metal findings that I want to use for steam punk projects. I got a hideously designed cameo that I can use as the base of another mold for more elegant and steampunky works. Hee! Still no luck getting size 0 circular needles, though. I have to go to a knit-specific shop for that, but I am lazy. It can wait.
mizarchivist: (Clay)
So! Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] rintrahroars pings and requests a set thanks to the Mall of Shadesong, then [livejournal.com profile] shut_it_already makes some requests for some tins and some custom jewelry. I brought in jewelry to my gym and traded with the owner for one month free pass. He also suggested I bring in some stuff to sell in the front hall for these last days before Christmas, which I will run home and set up to bring in for tomorrow. Rain ->pour = happy crafter.

So, for any procrastinators out there, an FYI: I reduced prices on my Etsy page, which has been a bit of a wasteland. If you want to see more of what I'm up to look for my writeup in the [livejournal.com profile] shadesong link above.

I'm only working today and tomorrow. Someone (uh, that'd be me) forgot to pack my work ethic when I left the house this morning. D'oh.
However, I have this to share-
retrospective of my art of a certain size and medium
These are all the tins that I have of a certain size- the bigger tea tins aren't really documented easily in this format, but I will get to it eventually. I feel like that's a lot and not enough. Spoken like a true addict, I know. These don't include the newest things that are done and need of curing and/or shellacking.
Again, here's a link to the retrospective. Newest at the end. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] drwex for taking on the camera work
mizarchivist: (Avatar- Eeeviiiil)
I have purchased 2 cameo molds- one of a shell (is it still a cameo? Sometimes?) the other a skull and crossbones- those from the same seller on Ebay.
Then went and found stuff on Etsy in the gears and clocks realm. I plan on doing some pressings of the watch backs with the exposed gears, possibly make a mold or three from the best of those. I discovered yesterday it's impossible for me to recreate 3-D gear shapes. I did some entirely gorgeous metallic roses, though. Why am I at work? Why am I not at home continuing with my obsession? Right. I have to pay for the supplies for the obsession and give my poor back a break.
brain imploding from ideas.... gah!.... but really - I have to at least wait til they mail the stuff to me.

I just signed up for my art show table for Arisia. I now want to start making stuff.  I'm already picturing in my mind what I want to do with the whole table I've requested- I picked up an ornament tree since the last con, so I can hang the glass ornaments, which could be for a Christmas Tree, or... whatever.  It will certainly be very eye-catching and more secure than last year's option.

I'm also thinking of putting together a catalog of my work so that I don't necessarily bring one of e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.
I do like to show off what I can do, but I also like to bring stuff to the show that will sell. Here's some examples of what I'm talking about-
Jewelry
Boxes/tins
Magnets
Ornaments
Any opinions on what is most eye-catching / art show worthy is welcome.

I may have mentioned that The Paper Raincoat is quite awesome. Do follow that link to listen to some of their stuff, although I believe they're also on itunes. [livejournal.com profile] caulay  and I went to hear them at Club Passim tonight.  We ended up sitting with an acquaintance and her companion by complete serendipity. Still quite lovely, although the opening act did little to nothing for me. They'll be back on Oct. 4 (a Sunday) for their CD release party. That disk will be purchased, but unlikely for me to attend.

No surprise: it's a bad idea for me to go into BeadWorks after months (possibly 8-10?) of not shopping. But boy do I have some pretties now.

The Beer Garden (it has a longer name than that, but I forget)- was a decent quick dinner spot- $4 burger & fries and it was just about exactly what I wanted.

There might be more to day but I'm now too tired to manage coherent. Oh, besides it's obviously been a nice day: I received no and sent no emails and I only had to scroll down half a page to catch up on LJ.

When last we left our herione (in the false book on the 3rd shelf...oh wait, not that) - 3 of the 4 new Ikea shelves were put together. Last night I tackled the final one by myself, which was a little harder than expected,  particularly the sliding the backing in- it just didn't want to go, but I persuaded it. With a hammer. And the hammer in this case is a hammer, not a metaphor.

Once the last TV is sent down to the curb (to be picked up with its brother from another mother) for tomorrow's trash pick up- and the shelving that's being replaced -not worth free-cycling that., btw, it's that gross: left over from grad-school hand-me-downs. In short: fugly.--- anyway, once all that is out of the way, it'll look less like a wreck up in what we could just about call a library.  Knowing that the TVs really will be gone by tomorrow evening makes me SO happy. It'll be proof of improvement. Additionally, I've been chipping away at an inordinate amount of cardboard that had been left on the front porch over the last few months. None of us at DMH like dealing with it, so I make it go because ... ech. Makes the place look a bit ratty.

Naturally, I came up with yet another furniture arrangement last night after I was too tired to implement. However, I think it's the best notion so far.  Most of the time, there won't be a bed in this room. I acquired an aerobed for guests. I've also decided to leave the futon frame [profile] quiet_elegance  made in couch form and find enouch cushioning to make it habitable, so it could easily be a secondary movie watching venue (yay laptops) or craft space, etc. Like I said: habitable. The thing of it all, is that in order to share my plan properly, I'd need diagrams, which I don't have in this medium. But I suspect really few people beyond me care enough, so we can assume smiling and nodding is happening, and I'm cool with that.

Has anyone else been contemplating a yard sale? I have about 1/4 of a yard sale accumulated at this point and I'd love to get rid of the clutter. Considering, I'll probably go to good will with my stash.

Also: ow. 2 days of heaving furniture around has me worshiping at the alter of Advil.
