It's been 14 years since [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance and I decided to make an official go of it.  This year he's gotten me a renewed, slightly used, but nicely broken in Commander in Chief. This is really preferable over a new one, because I don't like the OS that goes with Mittens.

Some snapshots from anniversaries past, courtesy of Live Journal:

2003-2011... )
2012- It's been an intense year of growth and challenge. Again, there's this kid. He's great and amazing and a lot of work.
My work has shifted remarkably over the past 12 months. I have a great part time office mate/colleague whom I adore. We have a development director, a new admin, and a new cataloger. The new outnumber the established and our activity is just spinning up and up and up. We have a lot to fix, though. So much growth so quickly, and we just don't have the infrastructure to deal a lot of the time. But I hope we'll get caught up and be even better for it.
And omg, Election Fatigue. I know all elections can be pretty exhausting, but this one felt extra vitriolic. I don't want to say the worst ever, because that seems unlikely. I'm hugely relieved that the president has been re-elected. I realize he's not perfect, but he will at least support (most) of the social issues that Mittens almost certainly would actively trash or allow his cronies to trash.
[livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance has had a rough year. We realized in April that it was most realistic for him to stay home and be the full time kid-care. He's also found that too many years of working in the field and deferring health maintenance has lead to a lot of catch up.  BTW: cortizone shots happen on 11/20. Hopefully this will be the tipping point for him.

There's, of course, SO much more than just what I've said, but it's a snapshot.
LOVE to my dear life partner (in crime). LOVE to everyone who voted yesterday and to our POTUS who'll be around for a few more years. LOVE to my friends and family who remind me that the world is full of wonderful people. People who like me!

OK- due diligence by including this social medium to my reminders to the world.
I have an Etsy shop!

In reality, what's there is a teeny tiny portion of what I have. I make clay objects: curios, tree ornaments, tins, jewelry, steampunky goodness, magnets, dragons, celtic knot work, flaming skulls! So if you're into any of that, I'm your girl. If you are interested, ping me and we can talk about what else might be available beyond the storefront.

For those who're familiar with my work, all products are things made earlier than this year. I have a hell of a backlog and that'll have to do for now.

I have rebooted the store. I had to revamp a bit- I'm still working on repopulating the goods.

Less than a week now until Stitches Needles n' Guns. I spent most of my last craft days working on skull & crossbones medallions that can be finished to magnets, pins, or pendants. Some homework on Derby team colors may have some positive returns. Also, I remembered, oh yeah. Valentine's Day, so did 2 more (total of 3 now) heart shapes that once held Mrs. Fields chocolates (oh, like 4 total?)-- if anyone has access to those in the days to come, let me know.  I used up most of what I had for this show. Also, the Altoids Smalls are new enough I have very few of them to begin with.
I had enough forethought to dedicate any free time today to actual show prep- pulling everything up, packaging, labeling. I had forgotten how frickin' cute my little winged dust-catchers are. I'm basically bringing everything and hoping for the best. Not that I'm putting everything out at once, I don't think. Clutter = bad. It would be really cool if I could go to one more craft fair and yet manage not to do any new product for the hypothetical future one. I ... have a LOT of stuff.  I have plans to have a sale/clearance bin that may entice. The medallions at least are Etsy-worthy. Once this is over, I'll put up listings.
I'm just afraid that after all this work, I won't sell much at all. I don't think I have a concrete goal or anything. The only reasonable one I have at the second is to give away all my cards at least (I need to get new ones made that list my Facebook page). The Arisia success could be an indicator, or just false hope generator.
And just like me, I've already picked out my outfit for vending. I will definitely do my best to take some pictures for posterity.

Don't suppose anyone's planning on going to the show? It wouldn't suck to see a familiar face or two.

Optimism!

mizarchivist: (Hair-braided)
I knew if I waited patiently, the bleeeeh of post-con would dissipate. The Etsy order last night and my father's arrival to Logan not 10 minutes ago has catalyzed. Also, it's sunny. And one of my more recent acquaintances, Richie, the homeless guy who hangs out by the School St. Starbucks- while not there today, gave me enough intel that I could leave him some of our extra spaghetti. He uses one of the abandoned newspaper boxes for his sign and food people give him- at least the latter in these colder months. So today was my first successful food drop. I always wished Bob had one like that.

The last Etsy sale I made before this evening was in November 2008. I sold my flagship piece, The second box I ever made. I'm.... sad. I have the tools and technology, though, I shall rebuild it.
tie dye tin goes to a new home tomorrow
It's funny- I'd let everything- and I mean everything- lapse on Etsy last Thursday, so I reloaded it all this afternoon. I guess it really just is my season. I am grateful.

Oh- the purchaser is in Australia. This is my first international sale.

I have purchased 2 cameo molds- one of a shell (is it still a cameo? Sometimes?) the other a skull and crossbones- those from the same seller on Ebay.
Then went and found stuff on Etsy in the gears and clocks realm. I plan on doing some pressings of the watch backs with the exposed gears, possibly make a mold or three from the best of those. I discovered yesterday it's impossible for me to recreate 3-D gear shapes. I did some entirely gorgeous metallic roses, though. Why am I at work? Why am I not at home continuing with my obsession? Right. I have to pay for the supplies for the obsession and give my poor back a break.
brain imploding from ideas.... gah!.... but really - I have to at least wait til they mail the stuff to me.

With some encouragement, Etsy seems like a reasonable answer. Until [livejournal.com profile] lizzielizzie  pointed it out, I'd not thought to feed in a few items a day vs. ALL-AT-ONCE-zomgwtfbbqkittens!
At least I'm getting faster with picture-taking.

In other news: I really don't want to go to work tomorrow. Yeah, who does, right? Additionally, my parents will be here on Thursday!

For your consideration....
I started this before Dragon Con, appropriately enough. Hm. I don't seem to recall why I wanted to do this- other than I seem to have a thing for Dragons, I'm reading Elizabeth Bear's Whiskey and Water, which makes one ponder dragons some, and... oh yeah. It's totally COOL.

I made this
  dragon side

head chases tail   top side

And now I'm very tired and it's time to rest my excessively aching back. I'll likely re-take pictures more officially after it's been cooked and finished.
I'm not a very fast learner, though (wrt pain/crafting)- I have plans to do this style- same shaped dragon, different color for him and the background. I also plan on using the medallions scattered around the sides in at least one color. Not enough hours in the day.

All the pictures taken tonight are in my clay gallery.

I'm 3/4 finished with a new flaming skull tin. This was the inspiration (made for q_e):

but being the second time I've done it, I am happier with the technique. I wrinkle my nose at how washed out that picture is. I suspect it was taken with the old camera. (Checks... yep. finished about 2 weeks before Christmas last year. That'd do it. However, I refuse to get all OCD about it now )
Anyway... tin! Yay!! I've not put anything new on Etsy in months. I'm hoping this one will spark some interest.

I hope the folks in these parts got to enjoy some outside today. [personal profile] woodwardiocom and I had a picnic, mostly ignored the very manly baseball game in favor of watching the clouds scuttle. The were in quite a hurry.

All I want to do is craft. A little less work ethic and I'd be tempted to call in "sick."  There's been success in the trade with the Etsy person. I'll be getting two lightly scented soy candles for one dragon and a pair of hoop earrings (latter thrown in as I felt like I was getting a much better deal). So, I need to replace the dragons that have been acquired since the beginning of the week, photograph the 3 tins I've done since I got back from Maine, cook the other tin I finished last night and get back to the New Clay/Holiday project that I've been ignoring for the past week.

The results of all this single mindedness is forgetting to email, actively read LJ, and not watching the shows I've recorded on TV. I want to say at least I've remembered to keep eating, but that's not entirely true, since I sort of forgot to start making dinner last night til reminded that I at least sounded like I was going to do so not half an hour earlier. In my defense, I wasn't actually hungry yet.

Since I am planning on going to work (and possibly working while at work) I'd best  find some waterproof outerwear.

This afternoon I've gotten one request for a trade and one for a commission from my summer benefactor. Suddenly I'm sort of liking the $WinterHoliday thing

I sold my fire reader dragon today to a woman in Brooklyn. What a very nice surprise! I'd been feeling out of sorts yesterday and missing my bio-family something fierce. That reading dragon was one of the first I put on Etsy and one of the most popular ones to view. Finally selling it is totally awesome.  It being that time of year, I'll hope it's not the only activity I'll see. But no holding of breath. Purple is nice to wear but not as a skin tone.
::Self Promotion::
Cosmo's Curiosities - I have dragons, jewelry, and tin boxes. If you see something close but not quite, please let me know, as I'm very happy to do specific commissions. I still have over a dozen boxes that fit BPAL vials upright. The standard Altoid size also fits them, but they are recumbant. For further examples of what I can do, visit my Picasa Gallery for Tins & Hearts or Dragons or Jewelry. The one thing I've not recorded yet is the variation of turning the 2-D stuff into magnets. This works very well for the butterflies and dragons. I've also not photographed some of my newest jewelry designs that incorporate a lot more shells/stones.

My current custom-order Etsy patron told me, belatedly, that she was out of the country until last Saturday. She said she'd get back to me once she was home. Well, it's now been a few extra days and no word. At what point do I say "helloooo? Are we present?" I don't want to be pushy, but we sort of had an agreement.
edit: Ok. Sent a short note.

Etsy Update

mizarchivist: (Heart)
Oh yeah!! I meant to say also, but this is worthy of its own heading, that I have completed the comissioned tins for my Etsy customer. They're still visible in my shop. I also uploaded 12 new pieces of jewelry and 2 new tins that are not already claimed.
[personal profile] ricevermicelli asked me if I had heard of Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker. I boggled slightly. As it turns out, YES. That was a very important set of books when I was a child. My mother and I would go on walks around the neighborhood looking for fairies and identifying various habitats. I chart my interest in fairy art from this
flower fairies--> theirs
heliotrope ---> Mine.
Keep in mind, it's not a 1:1, or anything. Simply in the range.

The stranger who bought a small tin from me last week has asked me to make custom made tins- we had a lot of back and forthing about the dimensions she'd need. Just about none of my tins are 2" tall, which was her requirement. They're either woefully short of that number or over 4",  which wouldn't work. However, I figured out that the largest spice container tin on the Container Store site is satisfactory to her, so I need to make a pilgrimage to the Promised Land.  EDIT: I ended up buying 20 tins online, so the end cost will be 1.50/tin instead of 2.50 and I get to use Etsy "profits" to pay for this purchase via paypal. I hope it doesn't take too long for them to ship! :)
I'm giddy with this major success. I expect I'll get a few extra of the same size on the principle of she may have friends who would also like some of that sort. It would be entirely ironic if future sales were for a size I have none of normally.

Also: finished The Book this afternoon. I'm pleased. Email me if you want to natter on about details.
mizarchivist: (Avatar- You are such a fangrrl)
I have no idea when I'm going to stop alerting the world that I've sold stuff there. However, I look forward to the moment where this becomes a possibility. If nothing else, this is a noteworthy sale because this time no idea who the purchaser is. I think this is a first. Heehee!  Tin in question.
In other news, My internal clock is 2 hours slow. K. looked at me funny when I decided to have dinner at quarter to 8. I also didn't feel like I was awake until sometime after 5pm today. I'm planning on dialing it back to what I consider normal. My first step was not to give in to the desire to nap this afternoon. Also, I'll be going to bed very shortly.
Afternoon fun was had with [personal profile] nchanter. She took me up on the collage sharing. She came way prepared. I used her supplies and she used mine! Pity we were both running in the red on energy, but it's also very cool to have someone who gets the craft groove in which there is no talking. I still have a major bounty of supplies if anyone wants to take me up on it.
I met up with another Continuing Ed. instructor this evening. She's from NYC and is up in the area often. She focuses on tech innovations and teen lit. We chatted about a lot of things. We discovered out rather quickly that we both love all things Joss. Woot! She gave me several good ideas and boosted my confidence on what I need to do to make my online class super-awesome.
Now let's see if I pass out if I stop moving. I hope so.

She does the dance of joy, Numfar, for she has made her first sale on Etsy! Thanks to occasional train buddy, [personal profile] jasra, for the patronage. Narcissus shall transfer houses shortly. He really really is a one of a kind and while I tend to say this about most of my work being favorites, I think he really is.
Thanks, too, to [personal profile] shadesong who requested a raver friendly tin.

So, I've not had much luck at local establishments with my unique brand of hip, yet useful art objects. So, I was thinking where could I find a more sympathetic audience? Hm. Well, the head shop back at OU for one. So, with a little help from my friend [sic], I got the contact info for the manager of the Import House. She's agreed to see a sample of what I can do. Since just about everything I've done is listed at Etsy, I decided to make them stuff specifically so I wouldn't have to take anything down. Here's to hoping. I mean, really. It's a head shop. How can they not like little decorated tins?! We'll see. These were pretty fun to make. They're always fun to make, but as you may imagine the tye dye ones take the cake on the fun factor.

I've uploaded the set into my existing gallery: the five starting with circus balloon and ending with tye dye.
