I started playing Pokemon Go last Saturday (red/valor!). I was initially not remotely interested and snorted about it all. And then [livejournal.com profile] asciikitty started playing. And then Jaime started. I felt left out! I realized it was silly to find all the reasons not to play (never was into it before, it's just so trendy and I'm cantankerous, I don't need one more thing, I don't think I'll be good at it/it'll be hard to learn, I've already expressed my derision publically, therefore I'm not allowed to change my mind)

Well, no.
So, here I am, I'm playing. It's fun! Incentivizing moving around? I need that. Having something low stakes to talk about with housemates? YES please. Also? It's just FUN. Further, it appears we convinced [livejournal.com profile] fubar to also join the collective as of yesterday, so now we can all geek out about this together.

It's also SUPER fun for me to wander though the Common as I'm wont to do on a weekday at lunch and see the clusters of people jabbing at their phone (too) trying to catch an elusive creature. I will occasionally ask if someone's playing and what team they're on. But only occasionally, since you can literally trip over players at the moment.

If anyone wants to go on a Poke-Adventure, lemme know.

Soooo I came back from Brooklyn to find that purple_terror had acquired the goods: XBox and Dance Central. I. Am. Happy. I am sweaty. This will entirely stave off winter doldrums, I do believe. Who wants to dance with me?

- thought I turned off my alarm, only to have it go off (probably for the best since I'd fallen asleep again)
- made coffee! Yay!... then forgot that I'd made and brought with me to drink at work and made another cup here.
- I have 2 meetings this morning

OK. that could be a lot worse, but it doesn't bode well.

Other thing: Yahoo Games tech/customer support determined that Alchemy and Windows 7 are just not compatible. I have been offered the alternative of Some Other Game offered by Yahoo to download in its place.
I loved Alchemy. Loved.  Features of excellence:
-not forced to do a timed game
-can walk away and pick it back up
-some strategy
-patterns
Do you, LJ-Land, have a favorite game one can get via Yahoo that has similar features?

A few months ago I did some play testing at Harmonix. I thought, hey, cool. I like playing Rock Band, that'll be fun.

Except it wasn't Rock Band. It's called Dance Central (hey, like Central Sq. where Harmonix is). Unlike Dance Dance Revolution, it has a nifty little camera/sensor - no more getting your feet just so on the pad. It also takes into account whole body movement, not just feet. It is awesome and I can't wait til this fall when it comes out.

So now you know.

Definitely digging Beatles Rock Band- We had Robin over to get a full Fab 4 thing happening. We did a bit of the chronological storyline, but I  at least was a bit too impatient to wait for my preferred later works. I will have to practice drums by myself until I get the muscle memory down, but I switched off with Robin and [profile] quiet_elegance with the mic. I hope my mom can visit soon so she can help with the singing. I think she'd love it. As soon as q_e has gotten over the worst of post surgery, we'll definitely have to have some parties. The big TV does justice to the OMG graphics. I don't want to alarm anyone, but I think the band was on Druuuuuugs! For that matter, some of the graphic designers probably are, too- not that there's anything wrong with that.
There was general awkwardness over the oh, yeah- this is mostly blues. I have problems with the blue/red chord. I tend to gravitate towards bass, but [profile] purple_terror and I switched off a bit. I'm still amazed at how intuitive the progression was. And I wish I could remember which one had a walking bass line but it was in the Liverpool part of the story. :)
After about an hour our eyes were crossing so we watched dancing auditions and Glee, so a performing arts sort of night. Yay :)

Thank you, Harmonix! Thank you [livejournal.com profile] badlittlemonkey !

So.... yeah. [profile] purple_terror  picked up a full kit for Rock Band 2. The initial playlist is really not filled with old favorites, but I have heard of this thing called "Track Packs" now, and I feel like my doom is guaranteed. Well, that was foregone considering there's now less than a month until The Beatles comes out. p_t pre-ordered it, so it'll arrive on 09.09.09. doom.  I'm hoping to have gotten used to the different controllers by then so I can have pure, unadulturated Beatles love at that point. Oh, and our household needs a singer. All 3 of us flatly refuse to pick up the mic, but I might do so when the new game comes out. I do sort of know most of the songs and stuff...

damn you, [personal profile] badlittlemonkey . I blame you.

My trip to the Poughkeepsie area to see my family there was uniformly lovely. I had a good enough time I left an hour later than expected. I hadn't realized exactly how quiet things are 'round here most of the time and I'm enjoying some tranquility. And shortly I'll be enjoying some parfait.

Major wins: Cousin Charlie enjoyed Monty Python and Zombie Fluxx games so well, I left them in his possession. Cousin Katherine and Aunt Wendy loved - adored- rhapsodized- about some necklaces I made particularly for them. This is quite pleasing.

I want a murphy bed. The one I slept on there was really comfy and in exceptionally attractive furniture.

The return trek was gloriously uneventful and low stress to the point where I realize I need to go visit more often.

Rock out!

[profile] quiet_elegance 's birthday copy of Guitar Hero Metallica is a lot of fun. I am not sure I ever want to learn drums, though. Yikes :P q_e seems quite happy to flail away, though. No Leaf Clover and King Nothing were my favorites of this evening's jam session. Until we got the world tour bits and this version of the game, we had to play GH in a relay if all 3 of us were into it. None of us want to sing (yes, do come over [livejournal.com profile] kazmat and/or yes, I'll come play at your house ) -

I did just buy a copy of Rock Band- I've been told by this guy I know it's a good game. And I'm keen on the compare/contrast. What I also want to do is get a copy of the first GH, but I don't think it exists for Wii, and I dunno if it would work on the system. (yes, if someone knows, tell me if it works, but just the one time).

Now: dancing!

People - again- keep asking me how are things, what's going on and all- Stuff? Not much? And yet- lots.

Snippet 1: I've been hungry pretty much all day. I ate the same amount of yogurt/granola (etc) for breakfast and by 10:30 I was gnawingly hungry. This might have something to do with my trend this week to ride my bicycle to Alewife and then once in and gym-ward, do machine-y weighty things. Oh..., hi, metabolism. Did you just wake up or something?! Feh.

2: After several months of ignoring, I started playing Guitar Hero again. I'd been toodling around at beginner and couldn't quite bring myself to the scary of middling/medium. Silly. Everyone is awful when one changes levels- I don't get a free pass on that. It was hugely gratifying to see major improvement from first song to last. There will be more music-based game playing in the coming weeks. See, there's this version of GH that features this band that [profile] quiet_elegance  sort of likes. You know, Metallica? Additionally, since [livejournal.com profile] badlittlemonkey  is now firmly in my acquaintance, there's a mandate to compare/contrast GH with Rock Band. It was inevitable, given The Beatles version comes out on 09.09.09. But still. No harm in getting used to the format beforehand. :-)

3. Worky-work stuff. Hm. This sort of got really long. I guess I've been busier with this than I thought )

4. New quests- So, when I was in Cancun with [profile] quiet_elegance , we thought about where we might want to go next now that he has a valid passport again. Hm. Somewhere in Europe. Somewhere gorgeous. Perhaps somewhere that requires a new language to be learned. Hm. Italy! So, I bought a copy of Rosetta Stone for Christmas, but until yesterday hand't installed it onto a machine. That done, I've now gotten as far as the second lesson. I call it a win thus far! Major emphasis on intuative learning- visual-vocal associations and... yeah. So far, I entirely recommend. Why the blazes couldn't learning German be this fun?!

5. Old quests- There was just a flurry of crafting done over the past week. I may continue with that. This weekend will be spent traveling as much as possible on 2 wheels. (or 8 if they're skates)- I have a picnic, a concert, and a movie to look forward to. Oh, and the socializing that goes with all three.

Maybe I should update more often.

Hokay. I was bored. [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror  got Dance Dance Revolution at Christmas and we hadn't pulled it out yet.  This is no longer the case. Wow, I'm soooo bad at this one- I was ecstatic to get a C in training at beginner level. Mostly I got Ds. I'm pretty OK with my mediocrity because other than one foray over a year ago, never played. I've now made up for the fact I've not been to the gym since last Wednesday, though. Someone who does know what they're doing will have to come over sometime and give me some pointers.

Um, Oops?

So, Guitar Hero has featured all weekend. I want a chick-rocker version, but I don't think it exists. We are looking forward to the Metallica one that comes out in March. [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance  has a mandate to kick our asses.  We've unlocked some great songs- today's was Santana's Black Magic Woman, which is damn hard.
In the meantime, I have a very sore bunch of tendons, little colorful dots running past the back of my eyes, Aerosmith stuck in my head, and every time I listen to the radio, I evaluate if the current song would work in the game.

After [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror  recovers a bit more from his tender belleh, we'll have to break out the DDR

I feel like I've been a bit hermited or at least not saying much of late, but then again, I've spent the past week sick, which doesn't help.
What's happened, what's happening...

Leave for Ohio tomorrow with [profile] quiet_elegance, return the following Tuesday. I need to pack. I have many things on my list yet to check off, but first: Go to the doctor's today to see if we can speed up this getting healthy thing. At this point, I've been living on Advil every 4 hours and/or Robitussin. This means getting up every four hours to redose at night. It's getting old.

Had my last day of work on Friday til October. Despite living it, I don't feel this new reality yet.
Went to the pool party and took some pictures and videos of spinners. My camera isn't built for that sort of situation, but I got a few decent ones of [personal profile] buxom_bey, [personal profile] dreams_of_wings and [personal profile] lightcastle. Also, I got vid of Gabriel's first burn.
Made a Jayne hat. It's cunning.
Went to my Firefly RPG- first time with all players there!- and managed to do not so much with gaming. Oh well. Still fun.

  • I've gotten confirmation for the times for my Continuing Ed classes
  • The Dread Carpenter
  • [info]quiet_elegance seems to have been accepted by the pirate foreman-chief and the 3 day job seems to be sticking for the time being- weeks? Months? For now. 'tis more than good. He was chortling last night that they were paying him the going rate to fill in nail holes, something he could do in his sleep. He is very pleased by the current developments and his indenturing will happen as soon. Sort of like inititation at the frat, but no cricket bats. In the meantime, he's gone from uner-worked hermit to over-worked hermit. I am not arguing with the weekend hours at this point. He's having fun being needed and useful, which makes him a durn chipper dude.
  • The visit to Ohio in early July (partially to visit all the parents, but also sabbatcial stuff) is shaping up. I have had useful emails from those who'd host the workshop I'd give. While I will not plan for a program next month, we'll meet and talk about what will happen when I do.
  • My niece is home from the hospital after a (hopefully) successful surgery. No word on lab work until next week, though.
  • Bailing on Pride in favor of a relaxed and dry day at home. Bad weather + inconvenient transporation... yeah. Home. Maybe even some crafting!
  • RPG session this Sunday!
  • We have confirmation that I have a minion to fill in for me while I'm out this summer. She starts training a week from Monday.
