We got word our old Subaru finally sold at auction... for less than 500 bucks. I have to wonder if maybe they had to pay someone to take it. We will be able to claim 500 on our taxes next year. I'm glad I didn't have to try to sell it. I'm glad we got rid of it before it fell apart under the weight of itself and the broken on it. This season has included [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance  spending a great deal of time with some local mechanics and he's done a raft of favors for them, so I doubt the current beastie (still unnamed) will take a similar path. Hopefully will also avoid smash-ups on rt 2.

I'm trying to avoid getting a rental car for Matt while our car is in the shop for a few days- or at the very least until I know how long we'll need one. Anyone have an extra car for him to borrow?

Money managing project is on pause while my brain adjusts to new info. It's neat, but I'm not keen on being obsessive. It gets boring fast. I am pleased with what I have thought of so far and feel rather empowered, so generally a win

Motorcycle project - not entirely certain what comes next, but it's also moving in the right direction. Need to hear back from a few camps at the very least. My goal is to have things sorted, if not wholly done, by Sept/Oct.

I spent the whole day in a seminar on basic skills for supervisors. So, if I didn't have enough from the first two points, now I have work-based logistical things to stuff into an over-stuffed brain. Really cool/useful bits, though. Yay! Now let's see if others at work will find it helpful (like my boss). All day seminars tire me out something fierce, so ...

When I came home to discover that the car that's under my care (caulay's) had one less side view mirror thanks to irresponsible motorist passing by. Oy. It's not quite on par with having to take someone else's kid to the emergency room, but it resembles quite a bit. "Hi, your child flung herself off the jungle gym while she was at school and I was not there to caution or save her. She's alive, but has stitches." Something like that. (eta) But, between this and the seminar: I've not had time to really read LJ today. I mostly was lookin' at pictures and reading headlines. y'all write a lot. Ironic that I'm adding to it. Oh well. If one of you has written something you expected me to comment upon or read or whatever, you'd best tell me directly.

Back to the plus side: I'm going on my honeymoon! 10 years and 1 day after the fact. Secrets Silversands Beach Riviera Mayan in Cancun- a full week in November. I'm satisfied and really looking forward to what feels like my first grown-up vacation. Thank you to all who chipped in some thoughts on my options. I'm happy with the package I was offered. It seemed reasonable to me, and my litmus test of [personal profile] buxom_bey's reaction helped secure that feeling.

Speaking of vacations, in case I'd not said so out loud in LJ land: I'm going to Dragon*Con! My first time- going w. my household and Robin. We're starting to get pretty stoked now that we're less than a month away.

+ Busy weekend in Providence, lots of people seen
- Didn't get home til 11 last night
+ Got home before the snow
+ Took today off
-------- so did [profile] quiet_elegance, because our car decided to stop being coy and go visit a guard rail going down rt 2.
+++++++++ He's fine, no need to go to the hospital or anything.
- Our insurance is... not great. They canceled our comprehensive coverage without telling us.
- we may be buying a new car if the damage is more than what we still have to pay off (a little under 5K)

The car is NOT my thing. I do lots and lots of things, but other than making sure that the ins. company and the loan company get their $ every month, Not. My. Thing. [profile] quiet_elegance is talking to everyone who needs talking to. He's still waiting to hear from Bill-the-mechanic and the insurance people on what happens next.  We will not be continuing with Liberty Mutual in future transactions.

I'm sort of bubbling over with the happy-
  • My first grant
  • Role Model for cool kid (going to talk to her tonight)
  • Crafting success in idea and some sales
  • In-laws were generous with holiday money, which means
  • Lower $ stress
  • The car is coming back after being gone less than a week at the autobody shop. The cost of fixing is exactly the amount from the insurance, so no fights on that
  • House is totally gorgeously clean and uncluttered
  • Successful dinner party with my coworkers who had a good time and all fit in my kitchen (with major furniture re-arrangements)
  • Parents will arrive in less than 5 days
  • Most of the holiday present getting is determined
The only downside to this right now is that I'm too hyper to sit still and work. I can live with that

The allergist is a funny guy. After determining I worked for a progressive (lefty? Yeah I can say that) religious organization and live in Lexington, he regaled me with his opinion about conscenting adults (for) and hypocrital evanelists (against). Further jokes involving my parentage- "I snore like a bastard," says I. "Had no idea parental marital status had anything to do with it." We like him. I go back in a month for my scratch test. Oh, also the woman who performed the breath test asked me if I was really only 5'3". Yes. I really am. Oh. Because your stats are such (meaning good) that the doctor wanted to be sure we had that right. Suuuper Lungs!

So, in the grand total of things re: car. We are getting (drumroll) a new engine, clutch, radiator, and timing belt. Apparently the head gasket blew because the radiator was on the fritz. The engine over-heated and warped the al-U-min-E-um that is the engine block. There was no rebuilt engine to be had, so they have to make the current one work. The clutch was past the half way point to fix, so that gets done. Clearly the radiator needs replacing if it was the cause of the whole thing, and throwing in the timing belt on top of it because the thing is a bitch to do properly, so the Man Who Knows Subarus will make it go proper-like. Must be done. His hourly rates are 1/3 of the dealership (35 range) and all this must be done. It's only money. This, too, shall pass. Could be worse: I could be ugly. And stupid. (That's for [profile] doeeyedbunny's granny) Any more aphorisms we want to throw out there?

Good news: the car is all fixed up
Bad news: cost over a grand to do. Yay more debt!

Spousal post-mortem discussion has both of us quite certain the guys doing the work are not to be trusted. We got a full warranty coverage for the car that's supposed to last 3 years or 3600 miles. None of this was covered, so KaWaMmY! Off to Reputable Mechanic for all things not entirely covered by warranty.

My father just got back from St. Louis to pick up the burgundy Mini Cooper he bought on E-Bay, his new winter car. Here endeth the transmission.

The new car should be picked up today. The eloan folk emailed me on Friday (at 5-something) to say that the check had been cleared from their end and here's how much I had to pay for the next 5 years (not as bad as I expected). But the dealer folk hadn't gotten the OK from their bank yet. Fine. We can wait 3 days.

I had a yummy dimsum experience yesterday and saw Shall We Dance with Caulay. Dance movies are slightly dangerous, as they always make me want to... well, not knit. [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance was asked and was receptive to the idea of taking a beginner type class with me- type unknown as yet, but I've always wanted to learn a latin style. :)

Saturday was spent in very good company with both [livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance, [livejournal.com profile] purple_terror and our friend Joe. The time had come to clean the basement. It looks so much better now! There's a fair amount of stuff to be taken to good will and even more trash. The floor was swept and I have to bug the landlord about extra insulation.
Joe is one of boundless energy, fantastic stories, and as he puts it- is very comfortable furniture. Eventually after getting unlost, Joe's cute chick, Deb arrived kept us company for the remainder of the evening.

A good weekend.

Hmph (I see that they haven't debugged update yet. That's too bad)
So, last week I successfully installed a new hard drive in my work computer, but failed to get the backups of my work and personal email back to life. I seem to have put myself in a bit of a holding pattern because of that. So, I'm choosing to move on and at some point I'll get the old email and all the Outlook peripherals (task list, contacts, etc) back in working order. In the meantime, I have a paper copy of my contacts list and my Visor has the list of tasks. I just have to make sure the visor doesn't crap out. No big.
Anyway, if any have noticed my non-responsiveness regarding mail, that'd do it.

My new intern starts today on the usual small processing projects. This is good
[livejournal.com profile] quiet_elegance is painfully busy at work and dealing with a boss who is choosing irrascible over helpful. It stresses him and bums me out that he has to deal with extra negativity.

We have successfully located a potential new (to us car), have the loan from an Online Lending Company for a reasonable rate and a goodly sum- we plan to only use a portion of what was offered. With the help of the ever-helpful [livejournal.com profile] mangosteen, we are likely not to have a non-conscentual postieror sexual congress moment when we go to sign paperwork. And Mr. Mangosteen gets to excercise the sadistic consumer beastie within! All win in this situation.

Oh yeah! Almost forgot the reason why I started writing was to announce my friend Manders has created a new community called [livejournal.com profile] meme_whores so folk can get their meme on without having any second thought about quantity or quality.

On the plus side
+ Going to Ohio to see family on Thursday
+ Get to talk to doc about BC options today (please, no more psycho pills!)
+ New Fearless Leader officially starts work today
+ Quiet_elegance's job is not skimping on hours for him to the point of overtime
+ Caulay and Ahf have loaned their pickup for a few days
+ Good amateur theater seen on Friday (All in the Timing), may get to see Much Ado About Nothing in the park tomorrow if it doesn't rain

And now for the negative
- Our truck is back in the shop after not starting on Friday. Still no idea what's wrong or how much this one will cost.
- I caught a cold on Friday and I'm not keen on being the phlegm monster
- I don't think I'll be seeing much of quiet_elegance while he's under the gun with so many deadlines
- Q_e's paintball marker needs to go to the paintball doctor. Something broke and it can't be fixed at home. So, his only day off this past week was shot in the ass.
mizarchivist: (don't fuck with me)
Good: Sushi Corner, Melrose; new Queer Eye; Girl With a Pearl Earring (book version); getting the truck back from Medford

Bad and Ugly: having the serpentine break on the way home. Vuja De, you say? Well, yes. It broke the last week of November last year.

Good again: having parts/labor be under warranty for a year. Now I just need to get AAA to tow to the garage.
